Introduce us to your team

Squarespace is known for being a design-centered product company. That means we've got company values like design is not a luxury and protect creativity, and we talk a lot about being relentless in our pursuit of great design in everything we do.

It might sound like serious business, but that doesn't mean we take ourselves too seriously.

Our team is made up of more than 90 product designers, content strategists, and UX researchers. More importantly, we're also DJs and dog lovers, travel enthusiasts and book clubbers, serial hobbyists and coffee connoisseurs.

We've been awarded for Best Product & Design Teams, Best Company Culture, and Best Work-Life Balance, but don't take our word for it. Get to know us better and see for yourself.

Share an interesting side project from a team member

We had a team side project called "Website Wednesday" - every other week, we would brainstorm and work on a website idea based on the prompt we picked together. The prompts were random and imaginative ("A website as a mood ring", "A website with public restroom", and "A website with an afterlife" etc), making it fun for us to explore. On Wednesday, each of us would share the website mockups we did with the team. It was a cool side project that kept us designers inspired.

What is the product you’re building?

Hot off the press - we just launched Fluid Engine, our newest drag-and-drop website editor, which is the simplest way to express creativity online. You can drag, you can drop, you can resize and overlap -- all within our flexible, guided grid system. This was a massive effort in collaboration with our PM and Engineer partners.

What does your workplace look like?

Squarespace is proud to be headquartered in bustling New York City, with offices in Portland, Oregon and Dublin, Ireland.

Regardless of where there are physical spaces, we've made it a norm to prioritize a collaborative, hybrid work culture.

But if you do find yourself in an office, there are plenty of activities to take part in, such as happy hours, celebrations, and volunteer events.

The dogs are great too :) meet the mayor of our Commerce org, Eddy.

When we can, we love getting people together. Our recent Product Design onsite was created for us to meet teammates in-person.

We got the chance to participate in a Natural Dye Workshop led by one of our Squarespace customers, Apprvl!

And capped off our week of onsite collaboration with a boat cruise around NYC!

What values does your team share?

Squarespace was founded on the idea that great design matters. At a company level, it is widely recognized that our design is a key differentiator that sets us apart from the competition.

And, as designers, it’s pretty sweet to work for a company that actively endorses the importance of design. We like to ship fast, without compromising design integrity. On the PD team, we have two main values:

  1. Quality matters: we zoom in, and obsess over the details.

  2. Cohesion is key: we zoom out, and optimize for the full user journey to ensure our platform is seamless.

That’s why we don’t let design debt sit unaddressed. We recently started a new tradition called Design Week, where we drop everything and make sure our product is upholding these values. Similar to the notion of an engineer’s Hack Week, this time is dedicated to polishing the product. That means a whole week of alignment, hierarchy, consistency, and accessibility - ahh, every designer’s dream ✨
