After launching Face Filters, the Stories team wanted to introduce more 'one tap' experiences, similar to Boomerang, that gave the user a delightful video to share with little effort. We'd noticed some trends in how people were using zooming (by swiping up on the shutter button while recording), as well as various examples from meme culture.
In collaboration with creative director Shigeru Mizoi and techical artist Jin Sung Woo, I began prototyping versions of Superzoom ranging from a more utilitarian tool to the more whimsical version that we ultimately shipped.
Leveraging both Origami Studio and Spark AR Studio, I created numerous variations, some allowing fine-grained user control, and others more automated. The first version we shipped was actually built as an AR effect (similar to face filters), in which I helped develop the face-tracking behavior as well as incorporating the now-classic "Dun-dun-dunnnn" soundtrack.
