Summary
In 2020, BrickLink marked its 20th anniversary and wanted to celebrate with its community by hosting an online event. This project also served as an opportunity for the team to work on something different and unrelated to current projects.
The 20 Days of BrickLink event revolved around 4 themes. Every week, we covered a topic/activity for each weekday.
My role
Celebrating the 20th anniversary was initially scoped as a small project that included some articles and social media posts. After further discussion with the team, we agreed that we needed to do more for such a significant milestone. I took the lead on this project and was responsible for a variety of deliverables such as:
-
Logo and art direction
-
Content strategy
-
20th anniversary swag
-
Marketing materials
-
Internal tools to enable content visibility and manage story submissions
Constraints and challenges
When we eventually agreed on what we wanted for the project, we were left with only 4 months to plan, design, and create content. Other things that created challenges for us were:
-
Having no dedicated resources
-
Having no former experience running an event completely online
-
Delays in merchandise due to covid impacting shipping and inventory
Outcome and learnings
We could've easily stuck to the bare minimum, but we were eager to deliver something memorable and engaging for the BrickLink community. The push for that and the effort we put in paid off. Over 150 members submitted their stories, the trivia attracted at least 40 participants each week, and our social media saw an increase in engagement. On top of that, the team were ecstatic working on something new and meaningful.
