Gboard was the first keyboard app for iOS from Google. Embedding Google Search in any screen of the system by using the nature of a keyboard app. I was one of the first designers brought this to life. I worked on this project until the first launch - closely collaborating with Google Creative Lab throughout the whole process.

Gboard

Tokyo is a very dense city where there are so many restaurants to visit. People live here are constantly craving for new dishes; a legitimate, fresh, and the one that’s worth sharing to social media. This project is inspired by this city and people.

## **Photo first search**

Before this project, we ran some foundational research for the market understanding. There was an interesting search pattern we could notice from 20-30s in the city. That they were using Instagram for a place search. When asked why, they just found it more compelling because they can see large photos right away. Compared to that, Google Search was overwhelming and text heavy to them.

They still used Google search as a tool but it was used only when they had to verify information and take actions. Search results weren’t inspiring enough for them to start journey with. There were simply too much information. So we tried to make it more compelling by making results more lightweight and visual forward.

But not all photos supposed to work. The source was also very important to user. From the research, we could identify that users are carefully investigating whether the photo is an advertisement or not. They wanted to make sure it’s coming from real user.

Photo first search on Google App

Google app is an app used by more than a billion people all over the world. It is a central hub for Google Search on iOS, therefore many features need to work flawlessly within the app. During my time at here I took the lead of framework of iOS, and deeply involved in Android, mobile app design.

Google App Framework

Google Assistant is Google’s key product since 2016. I was part of the UX team that drew the first shape of the product. During my time, I led few key features such as 3rd party integration (OpenTable, Uber), UX framework for Google Pixel, and Android TV integration.

Google Assistant Framework for Pixel and Android TV

Lens helps users to identify the world, learn more and explore. Millions of users are asking us questions like, "What flower is this?", "What this foreign sign is saying?" or "Can I find a similar dress like this"?

Lens Results Panel is Google's answer to users about it. We are tackling a completely new set of search challenges at Google - trying to answer visual questions with visual answer.

After spending \~5 years working on problems under search umbrella, I decided to tackle this new one. As well as a new challenge as a design manager too.
