Researched and collected data on the effects of increasing minimum wage on health and quality of life for low-wage workers and their families. While not directly writing the paper, I helped clean and source information used to identify how it was critical to improve the minimum wage and impact it had.

Over the past year, I've started to become more interested in the world of cinema, viewing many of the classics for the first time and coming to understand why some many people fall in love with film. Through this, I've also become more intimately aware of the criticism and the joy of dissecting why certain pieces speak to me.

Not only are critics some of the best at identifying why things work and don't work, but they also provide incredible insight toward how to view day to day life. I decided to try my hand at writing reviews to see if I could discover what it is I enjoyed about movies and other forms of media in the newsletter, [Somehow Reborn](https://somehowreborn.substack.com/).

These past few years I've spent a lot of time running, training for several half marathons and the upcoming NYC marathon. Because of this, I was inspired to create a board game that was based on running the marathon, which I tentatively titled "Set the Pace." 

The idea takes the core mechanic of moving across the board to reach the end first, giving each player stats to balance, items to pickup and ways to influence other runners.

After drafting up a [board game design document](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qVtTP0tNvohh_kQbIiOqourC5AgkT2qDuxQslxetYWA/edit?usp=sharing) and getting friends to review it, I created a test prototype with paper, card sleeves, and extra dice I had lying around. I played a game by myself, then a few games with some friends.

As of right now, I determined that the current approach is not the way I'd like to keep going and am reworking what this may look like in the future as I still believe this idea has potential.

During the summer of 2017, I worked on researching and providing support for papers focused on various budget, tax and healthcare policies for the Center. I typically spent time reading articles and running up to the hill to interview with folks that the economists needed.

I also wrote the weekly *In Case You Missed It* (ICYMI) pieces summarizing the week's news.

I ran the social media campaign for the Jacobs Design Institute and promoted the new Masters in Design program run at UC Berkeley. This included the Spring Design showcase, and other speaker event series to talk about their approach to accessible and innovative design, both physical and in virtual space.

Led the startup in building products focused on connecting families with children with behavioral disorders, with providers, schools, and insurance companies. Below I've highlighted two major projects I worked on.

### Brand and Website Revamp

When I joined Tilly Therapy, it was working to consolidate and expand into the various brands from different states and services into one parent company. I took over the project in ensuring that the previous branding and clientele would understand who folks would be communicating with, while also keeping the same enjoyment and appreciation of the older brand.

I led the communication and effort to rename the company to Tilly, while also deciding the type of branding and design the company would uphold moving forward. I also ensured that all relevant stakeholders knew that while we had marketing changes, the standard and promise the company would have for its families continued to be the number one priority.

To better connect therapy providers and schools with families, I created the onboarding and scheduling system. Simple in theory, the project required clear delineation of details and an easy customer experience to ensure everyone knew what was required from the type of insurance available to when to assign kids to certain providers at specific times of day and locations.

I collaborated with our engineers and designers to ensure that all required information for necessary parties was available, while also upholding privacy and clarity. I also held many user session conversations with our clients and businesses to receive their feedback on what they needed and designs.

I delivered a successful pilot and rollout of the onboarding process for our clients and businesses, while also ensuring that scheduling was built into the messaging and overview screens on the mobile and web apps.

Tilly Therapy

For a long while, I ran a photography business focused on graduation and wedding photography, while also supporting event and sports photography. Eventually I transitioned out of doing professional work and into personal film photography.

Photography

I currently volunteer with elementary school students to foster growth and love of learning at Sunset Park, Brooklyn. It's been wonderful to create art and science projects with them, support rebuilding the local park, and taking the kids on field trips out into their neighborhood.

I'm also mentoring with one sixth grade student over a few years, to provide a "Big Brother" 1:1 experience, as he starts to transition into middle school, and eventually high school.

Originally when I went to college, I planned to be a journalist, studying political science and writing about issues facing the local community. I spent much of my time interviewing folks, reporting on at least 3 weekly pieces (100+) and many long-form investigative features. I spent time at rallies, city council meetings, and court sessions, talking with folks from all over from innovations in science and technology to immigration reform, from new restaurant openings to fire outbreaks.

I also edited the Weekend Edition of the paper, collecting short stories, poems, and interesting think pieces from the local populace.

The Daily Californian

I partnered with a local nonprofit, Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments (SAVE), to address and discuss problems with teen dating violence. Through this effort, I created the Stronger Than You Think (STYT) campaign, which consisted of PSA videos, digital billboards, painted electric boxes, and tabling at local community events.

Our team received a city proclamation recognizing our local work in the tri-city area of Fremont, Newark and Union City, Bay Area, CA.

Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments

### Translation Job Platform

One of the challenges with translating games is finding an appropriate translator that understands your game and your audience. It is also difficult just finding folks, with no clear place to direct developers.

I piloted a new job platform that would help developers find translators, building a portal, a feed, and simple data organization tool with job/candidate information. I collaborated with engineers and designers to build out this site, while speaking with many in-house translators and developers to determine what they would look for in searching for a translating job for games.

The platform proved to be a success, increasing the number of translated games by 51%. This feature would also go on to be used to help developers find other folks to work on their game including other artists, developers, etc.

I also provided initial investigation into automatic translation with AI, writing reports focused on Google, Amazon and other various products focused on translation.

Roblox

Hustle is a peer-2-peer texting application meant for campaigns for political or fundraising purposes to quickly converse between clients, volunteers, and relevant partners.

Led an initiative to add and revise admin features that made it easier to build text scripting for outreach. Also aided UX research and design feedback sessions on calls and in-person conference events to recommend new workflows for fundraising political campaigns.

A new type of user that was added when I joined was the Admin position. Meant to oversee businesses and volunteers, some of the initial features to recommend potential scripts remained underutilized, including the lack of customization and limited duplication. In addition, the organization and access left much to be desired.

I worked with the design and engineering team to put together a new workflow and organizational structure to help volunteers more easily understand and use scripts to reach out to clients. The new approach led to an increased response rate by 30%.

At the same time, I also worked with collecting design feedback sessions on calls at the American Federation of Teachers Conference and other online calls with political campaigns to identify and prioritize backlog of key features.

Hustle

I launched a mentorship program to support students interested in tech for social good, pairing folks for talks and hosting a short speaker series around this partnership. This built off of the collaboration and projects our students had with other nonprofits and the technologies they needed to run projects.

I also helped work with other universities to establish their own chapters of Blueprint to work with local nonprofits in their communities, expanding to 3 new campuses.

During the pandemic, I started *[Gibson's Coffee Corner](https://www.instagram.com/sleepytigerscafe/)* (renamed to *Sleepy Tigers Cafe*) to taste and try out different coffee beans with friends and others. Having only recently starting to get into coffee myself, this was a fun way to buy in bulk and connect with others live as we all remained sheltered in our own apartments.

Coffee Corner

One of the main challenges with the existing recommended candidates, was that the main way to engage with candidates was on its own specific tab in the employer portal. This did not fit the typical employer user journey when using the portal, requiring an additional step to find candidates.

To combat this, I proposed and added new areas that matched where employers needed to look for new candidates, including the rejection page, the candidates page, the messaging page, and the homepage. These surfaces were decided based on conversations with companies through user research and through data analysis as key points in the employer journey.

At the same time, the typical design of recommended candidate cards needed to be redesigned and integrated, so I collaborated with design and engineering to ensure this fit smoothly and provided accurate information fit for the screen the candidates were placed on. This increased candidate outreach by 12% and job applies by 7%.

When recommended candidates first launched as a feature, it was required for companies to sponsor a job in order to view these potential candidates. I pitched and piloted a version that unlocked these features behind the sponsorship wall, the reason being that it is hard for companies to understand the value of recommended candidates unless they tried it out for themselves.

I collaborated with designers, engineers, finance analysts, and business strategy to create a free trial version where we recommended 20 candidates in their employee portal, so they got a sample of what it could be like to have recommended candidates.

The pilot proved to be an incredible success leading to more companies sponsoring their job to engage with more recommended candidates, increasing CVR by 5% and revenue by 2%. Immediately following, I engaged with the marketing team to promote this new free version of recommended candidates, rolling it out to across the US and english-speaking regions.

Some of the major challenges Groupon faced when I joined the team was the difficulty to accurately find the items you were looking for. Because of the company's age and number of teams that work on the search feature, over time the search feature has become bloated, making it challenging to find the right items in the catalog.

I worked with the engineering team to improve the autocomplete and search experience by reordering and targeting the right items that should display when search, replacing the old approach with a new NLP query matching process. I also worked with the design and marketing team that updated the filters and search display options to better show users why certain search results were displayed.

This proved to be a success at increasing CVR by 18% and OGP by 6%.

As more and more users came onto to the platform, Groupon was lacking in the identifying and choosing the right features to rank on in order to display the best products for that customer. After an investigation into the types of available data we could use, I prioritized which models we would proceed with testing to increase personalization for users.

The final model used in the personalized carousels on Groupon before I left helped increase OGP by 9%.

I hosted two 3-day hackathons for 2300+ students with a $300K budget in 2017 and 2018. Working with a small team of 10 students, I led the team in finances and operations, working to land sponsors, judges, and marketing out to students. I also founded Cubstart, a beginner-hacker mentorship program to teach new coders how to get started on building their first hackathon project. This eventually blossomed into its own college class.

From coffee shops to dining rooms, from city hall to the sewer plant, I’m curious to better understand the spaces in our cities. And that includes exploring the places in the neighborhood and the transportation to get there.
