## **The Idle Office**

I haven't work in an office for over a year, and I'm afraid to go back. I worked from home, coffee shops, airports and even in a brewery. I've established a routine and schedule that is best suited for me and the work I have to do, meaning I have a pretty good idea when and how to get things done throughout the day.

What all these places have in common was the ability to give me the mental (and physical) space I needed to do the work. The space to reflect, the space to walk and explore, the space to leave or to settle in. In a world where space is often filled, packed with things and possessions, space becomes a luxury.

While offices are the only place built specifically for us to get the job done, we don't actually get any work done at the office — especially creative work. But isn't answering emails, attending meetings and listening to your boss, what we call "working"? Not really.

We have small companies, large corporations and co-working business spending [(and losing)](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/13/business/dealbook/wework-third-quarter-earnings.html) a significant amount of money building the perfect office. The space where you and I are supposed to do great, creative work. But ask a friend, a family member or a colleague at the office, where do they go to get work done? What kind of space they need?

Usually, the answer is not the office but somewhere else. Like myself, some prefer the coffee shop, others the kitchen table at their home. I've even tried staying up late when everyone else is already gone. (late nights is advertising's favourite choice). Nowadays, the trend is to wake up at 4am, eat a ketogenic breakfast, workout, meditate, journal and by 6am you're done with most of your "work". What a killer start of the day! Not for me. It doesn't have to be this way. It shouldn't be this way.

We are all different from each other, and we work in different ways. Still, we must all come together to the office, usually an ugly building with lousy coffee, at a predetermined time and stay there for at least 8 hours. Of course, eight hours are just for lazy, uncommitted employees. The real heroes are proud of working night shifts and making you feel bad when leaving the office earlier. Going home on time is a form of treason.

The workaholic leisure-less culture of today judges the guy who finishes by 5pm and then goes home to have dinner with his wife or play with his kids. He is good at getting work done at the office. He found his space. Well done.

How come we became so confused about what should we actually do in the office? The Idle Office separates work in three parts to better understand the difference between making a living and having a life. Between finding your own space or taking someone's else.

### **1. Not Working**

Idleness and leisure are fundamental to Homo Sapiens. Not working is perhaps the most critical and neglectful aspect of today's humanity. We are always on, connected, pushing pixels, doing stuff when we should stop and do nothing instead. Mental idle time is vital for brain function, good for our health, and required for creativity. Today, in the age of manipulative algorithms, gadgetry and social media, we can't slow down enough. The most significant human achievements from our most beautiful art to the latest advanced technological breakthrough originated in idleness — in calm, contemplative moments of not working.

### **2. Deep and Focused Work**

This is where the slow thinking process of a concentrated mind is working to solve a problem and searching to find creative solutions. It's known as "I'm in the zone", or “flow”. We all experienced this phase. Time flies, we feel good but doesn't last too long. Unfortunately, it's becoming increasingly rare the ability to perform deep work without being interrupted or distracted by notifications.

### **3. The Rest**

Meetings, emails, calls, managers, bullshit. Our brain is in fast mode — full speed, reacting to exterior forces causing interrupted time. Small chunks of distracting moments, working on little tasks that put us on autopilot. Jason Fried, the author of [Rework](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6732019-rework?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=G5FVPD8lFO&rank=1), call this "working moments." You trade your workday for working moments. Your day is shredded to bits. Twenty minutes here, 10 minutes over there, lunchtime, another meeting, quick break and boom! …It's 5pm, and you didn't get any work done. You didn't have space.

What if we ignore the last part? What if we paid less attention to "the rest"? What if we reduce "working moments" to the absolute minimum? We would probably notice how difficult that is to do. We are so used to live in fast mode, in constant switching, busyness and overwork that a world without it seems impossible. There is an aversion to simplicity and quietness.

Next time a new business decides to spend millions on luxurious office space, perhaps they can pause and think about the Idle Office — where the tyranny of total work is absent. The real luxury is where human existence is fulfilled by just appreciating and living a calm, contemplative life, in one own's space and time. Only then we'll be able to do the work.

## Citizen of Two Worlds

### *The future is bleak, but it is human.*

During the biggest crisis of our generation, we are swimming on Netflix, pouring money into Amazon, and wasting time on social media. The cultural toolkit of modernity and its abundance distractions is pulling us into a world of make-believe. At the same time, decisions that can have long term consequences in a post-pandemic world are being made daily. The virus is only one of the two crises we are confronting. Soon, the pandemic will be past us, but the urgent, insidious planetary crisis will not go away.

To write about a realistic picture of the future is to confront my paradoxical brain between climate breakdown tomorrow and today’s crafted constructed fake world. One in which the fragile human species live as if they’re separated from nature.

I watch Netflix and buy things I don’t need on Amazon, but I also care about the climate crisis. The human-animal is constantly battling against opposing thoughts and living fundamentally in two opposed realities. We feel engaged and alienated. We care about the whole, but also the part. We build to later destroy. To be human is to deny and to confirm - both are vital but incompatible.

### **The Pessimistic Realist**

Inequality kills first. Most history is unjust, and the poor always suffer far more than the rich. As the planet continues to get warmer, over 10 billion humans are walking on earth in 2100. The wealthy elite and privileged class find refuge in their exclusive bunker style condos and luxurious submarines, chasing status, money, power and immortality. The segregated terrestrial mortals are forced into exile and spend their lives fleeing and recovering from [vicious storms, deadly heatwaves, extreme droughts and biblical floods.](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/16/opinion/sunday/fear-panic-climate-change-warming.html)

Global conflicts emerge over water, oil and natural resources. Every new year is about avoiding Armageddon as diseases evolve, nuclear weapons proliferate, economic, and political volatility increases.

The future generation inhabits a much more dangerous place. Climate instability and cataclysmic events will hunt down civilisation until doomsday. In short, humanity will continue to do what is already doing, only on a larger scale, and climate breakdown will become just the “weather”.

The future is bleak, but it is human.

### **The Fictional Optimist**

We were too many, using too much and too fast — perpetual growth was unsustainable. The policy choice of the century transitioned from man or nature to man with nature. When social norms change, it allows people to act, or in this case, act less. The earth is warmer in 2100, but the redistribution of wealth, degrowth policies, localism, resistance movements and the surge of a new generation of young activists created a Goldilocks phenomenon.

We slowed down the pace of life and reconnected with the natural world. Wildlife, new protected areas, and natural parks are soaking up the carbon and flourishing with biodiversity. Humanity quit fossil fuel addiction and the distraction of the world-wide-web. Instead, we adopted carbon-free societies and found our way into the [wood-wide-web](https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-48257315). Enchanted forests are no longer exclusive of fairytales, and our new understanding of the social network of plants, trees and woodlands revealed profound insights and implications for the functioning of the ecosystems — all beneath our feet.

We talk to rocks and celebrate mountains. We [dance](https://www.idlefilms.tv/#dancing) and sing. We watch birds and look up at the night sky. We listen to the oldest voice of the world — the wind. We finally understand that the simple and small unnoticed pleasures of life are far richer and more precious than manufacturing and consuming desire, or modernising the planet for “progress”.

The future seems “just right”.

The world has ended several times, over and over again. For the Amazonian tribes, it ended 500 years ago, for Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers, 12.000 years ago. Our world? We do not yet know when it will end, but there are no two ways about it. We’ll make a choice, or perhaps we already did, and we’ll learn to live with the consequences.

## The Mountain Lion Executive

### *Why the corporate world is a well-adapted environment for Mountain Lion Executives to thrive.*

It's Monday morning, and we all gathered in the agency foyer for another week of pretending. I don't see her. Maybe it's too early, perhaps she's still at home, so we wait… no one is fully awake or really care anyways. We wait more... and more… ok, enough of waiting. So, I started asking other colleagues around the office, where is she? Not a single person knew where she was. Well done boss.

I'm tracking down my ECD - Executive Creative Director. It's a bold title and pays well. It's the go-to person a creative team will look for guidance, assistance, leadership and inspiration. But what if you cannot find them?

ECD and business executives, the C-Level types from large global companies, have mastered an essential skill of survival in the corporate world. I call it the Mountain Lion Executive, or MLE (sounds more like [corporate jargon](https://www.thecut.com/2020/02/spread-of-corporate-speak.html)).

Considered one of the "big cats", Mountain Lions can be found throughout North and South America. These felines are a solitary species, and they live secretive lives that make it hard for scientists to study them. Also known as puma, panther, cougar, etc, his presence is known, his traces are all over the territory, and his return is certain. Still, you never get to actually see the fucking lion. The same kinds of mechanisms are in play for a Mountain Lion Executive.

### **Where are they hiding?**

Solitary and mysterious individuals, Mountain Lion (Ad) Executives every so often are obliged to adventure themselves into unknown territories - the advertising agency they work for. Not their natural habitat, still every agency employee knows when a MLE is in-house. Account directors and creatives love to advertise their sudden visit weeks in advance. However, only their most loyal followers who are close enough, have a visual confirmation of its physical presence.

The unexpected visit usually happens for a brief window of time during the day, and like real Mountain Lions, they prefer to hunt early mornings and evenings.

"Even when predators aren't killing anything, their tracks, smells, and sounds can instill a state of simmering unease in their prey. This creates what ecologists call a [landscape of fear.](https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/07/landscape-of-fear/565658/)" - writes scientist writer Ed Yong. In the corporate world, this is called "Fearsome businessman in suits".

A Mountain Lion Executive will leave his/her mark by filling your inbox with weekly emails that have nonsense topics like "Wider World Communities" or "Evolve or die". They'll inscribe their names and own every piece of work ever produced by the agency they work for, without ever contributing to it - revealing how powerful they are. In worst-case scenarios, they'll display unusual effort and jump on a call with a creative team. A remote call can have tremendous psychological effects once you hear the sound of a predator. Big cats have excellent hearings but exist in different realities. Mountain Lion Executives prefer to hide in their natural habitat; meeting rooms, airports, hotels, executive lunches, award ceremonies or rented yachts at beach resorts.

### **The certain return**

Mountain lions have a poor sense of smell but excellent vision. They cache their prey where they can return and feed on it over several days. Mountain Lion Executives rarely smell good creative work and lack the vision (or balls) to spot one when faced with it. Unless if it's award season. Nothing makes them jump into view so quickly as winning any useless industry award - give them a shiny piece of metal, and their return is guaranteed.

When not in award season and your agency hasn't won anything in decades, be attentive if you recognise a MLE in close proximity. You should immediately distance yourself and move cautiously - in other words, find another job. On the brink of disaster, chaos and mayhem, Mountain Lion Executives can exhibit social skills and occasionally show up for a motivational speech. Maybe a client who moved to a competitor agency, a lost pitch, someone will get sacked, or everyone will get sacked. These are all good scenarios to spot them in action.

The mystery of their presence, working on everything and nothing at the same time, their distance from the daily grit of real creative work and their occasional return because of some hidden agenda, give us a glimpse into the behaviour mechanisms of these corporate predators. The corporate world is a well-adapted environment where nonsense, narcissism and juvenile fantasy allow Mountain Lion Executives to thrive. In the end, we all fear the same thing - bigger predators and skilled ambush hunters.

Can their instinctive behaviour be harmful to a creative ecosystem? Maybe. Is it harder for creative ideas to survive and thrive? Possibly. Can Mountain Lion Executives coexist with the employees who are actually doing the work? Or perhaps it's a good thing we don't get to see them very often? Since every time we do, a dangerous encounter may occur. These are all valid questions I have no answer to, but one thing I know for sure: I'm a dog guy, and big cats are not to be trusted.

## The World is Going Viral

### *A globalised world is a delicate construction.*

Billions of people are in lockdown, over 1.9 million confirmed cases and more than 120,000 people have died from COVID-19 (these numbers will be outdated when you read this).

The world is going viral, and what are we doing?

Home office.

If you are not on the frontline fighting the virus, [next to the nuclear reactor](https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/04/05/youre-basically-right-next-nuclear-reactor/?arc404=true), doing lab research or keeping the supply chain running - you are at home, and like myself, pretending to be productive.

Working from home is one of Idlers, Slalomists, Epicureans, [Escapologists](http://newescapologist.co.uk/about/), and many other creative types, a noble aspiration for the good life. The problem is that I'm currently sitting in my home office thinking about a million different things: does my dog have enough food for the next weeks? Do I have enough food? Is my family living abroad taking this seriously enough? Is my 91-years-old grandpa properly secluded? Should I panic? Do I have enough money saved?

Notice that work isn't mentioned above. Why? Because thinking about work during a pandemic makes me sick, and you can see a sick culture by browsing the internet for 5 minutes. The number of articles, videos, tweets and content about working from home is shocking. I've seen headlines like "tips to increase productivity during a pandemic" or "how to set up the perfect home office" to mention a few.

Cities all over the world look like giant [abandoned movie sets](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/23/world/coronavirus-great-empty.html?utm_source=nextdraft&utm_medium=iosapp) - a vast emptiness and a strange quietness of what was once a lively communal area of gathering. And while this is happening outdoors, we are stuck indoors being seduced by digital consumption, frightened by sensationalist broadcast news and attacked by the idiocy of [politicians denying the crisis.](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/25/bolsonaro-brazil-wouldnt-feel-anything-covid-19-attack-state-lockdowns)

We are seeing lonely, scared people being asked by their bosses to hold on to their devices and tech gadgetry, so they can stay connected at all times and be more productive during isolation. Marketers and brands are advertising lockdown goals and productivity hacks for your newly converted home office when despairing family members worry about economic collapse and looming death.

We don't need tips on home office optimisation or how to use Slack, what we need is free money to pay for our bills at the end of the month. This is a time to think about new possibilities for human existence. Why not start with universal basic income? In an age that seems intent on destroying itself, is it too much to ask for free money? We'd be empowered to say "no" to a boss who demands a video call during a pandemic and "yes" to our own worries and preoccupations. A fully universal [unconditional pandemic security](http://www.scottsantens.com/unconditional-pandemic-security-emergency-ubi) payment would be the first step to confront the unknown of today and to uphold ourselves for the next uncharted future of climate catastrophe tomorrow.

"A globalised world is a delicate construction," wrote English philosopher John Gray. How can the same globalised world overcome the decline that appears almost destined to occur? Let's hit the reset button, limit our news consumption, get plenty of sleep, hydrate our bodies, cook our own food and invest time and energy on helping the person next door, not the one on Skype, Zoom, Google Hangout, Facebook and Instagram Live, WhatsApp, or ICQ.

I know how hard it's for humans to become wiser, we prefer being clever and richer. But Homo sapiens is once again naked, and the obvious truth is again exposed for everyone to see it - we're still part of the natural world, and history doesn't care about progress. We've been through pandemics, infectious outbreaks, ecological disasters, wars and many other upheavals before. They are the norm. Peace, prosperity and progress are not. But human beings adapt, adjust, and even find meaning in extreme situations. A crisis is a moment of revelation, a turning point where it creates pressure for the new challenge ahead, directing our attention and forcing us to see and aim accurately.

Unfortunately, for most of modern life, we've been aiming at the wrong things. We serve the economy when the economy should serve us. Our life is geared toward achieving status, material and economic success. Yet, in a pandemic, this clearly doesn't matter. The hollowness of our neoliberal logic, the endemic inequality of a rapacious capitalist society and the illusion that technocratic faith will set us free are painfully apparent and cannot continue to shape and dictate our lives.

We underestimate the power of vision and direction. If we are not serving on the frontlines, we should be resetting our world views, our real values, our real reason for doing things. Life on planet earth is becoming increasingly unstable. It's time for care and maintenance, not productivity hacks and home office.

### *We're living through an endless present, and every day is like the day before.*

I had been looking forward to the last day of 2020. That's what most of us were doing last year — looking forward to its end. As the first shots are being rolled out, year two of the pandemic continues to prescribe how we're spending our time. It seems like we're living through an endless present, and every day is like the day before.

In many countries, genuine solutions against the virus have been replaced with false action. Millions of people still remain out of work, and the rest of us who have a job, are Zoom-burned-out. [Domestic violence has increased globally,](https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-53014211) alcohol consumption has risen, and many adults exhibit symptoms of depression or COVID-19 blues.

## **There is Another Loneliness**

During the last glacial period, between 32,000 and 40,000 years ago, global temperatures were lower, and foragers who settled in frostier climates lived a different kind of lockdown.

For the several cool months that followed, gathering was nearly impossible and hunting far more treacherous. Winter season dictated the pace of life and work—it was time to stay put.

It's also the time where anthropologists and archeologists indicate Homo sapiens have crossed a pivotal cognitive threshold. Inspired in solitude, our ancestors created art. The busy minds of early humans would have been entertained by imaginative stories, ceremonies and shamanic journeys, while dexterous fingers demanded concentration, precision and practice to master new skills.

Diligence and wit have worked together to create the most famous pieces of pre-history art. Among them, carved out of mammoth ivory, is the [Löwenmensch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion-man), "Lion Man". It was built between 35,000 and 40,000 years ago, and it helps us reflect on the techniques, tools, and efforts needed to endure a highly complex, time-consuming task.

Let's go back even further. Roughly around 73,000 and 77,000 years ago, we'll find the oldest pieces of symbolic art. Recovered from the [Blombos Cave](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blombos_Cave) in South Africa, the shell necklace was made by much less practised hands (but not less skilful) than those that made the Lion Man.

When we look at these objects today, beyond the symbolic messages that each bead or carved ivory carry, one aspect of our species distant lives reveals itself. When not hunting or foraging, we were making art, either in the harsh northern European winter or in tropical African lands.

But we don't create art for art's sake. It doesn't exist merely as a distraction, while we wait to get to the "real work" we're supposed to do. We no longer fight nature with pain and peril. Today, real work doesn't mean foraging, hunting, or surviving. It means mostly [Bullshit Jobs](https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Bullshit-Jobs/David-Graeber/9781501143335), but that's another discussion.

Letting our minds daydream, play, create and achieve greatness out of nothing, have always been inspired by self-confined solitude. Making art is conquering the self.

Even now, as prisoners of modern caves, where the internet never sleeps, worshipping the busy-ness God of Productivity, or the cult of efficiency, art remains analog and cannot be in more than one place at the same time.

The beauty of the bird, the awe-inspiring landscape or the simplicity of the apples are made by artists who see what is really there, in that exact moment—highlighting the seemingly mundane we are so used to ignore.

It's with the strength of art, we dose and counterbalance the unimaginable misery, suffering, and distress that is part of human existence. We crave blue skies, flowers or handmade necklaces, not because they are pretty things, but because they give us hope.

Forget about the high-art of galleries, museums or snobbish collectors. Art has the power to silence the clamour in our minds, so let's use it for what it's really meant for—as a constant source of support and encouragement for our soul.
