## Part design

I designed and fabricated parts for existing and new products.

For existing products, my work focused on optical testing and calibration. I built two systems to experiment with variations to the ML1's optical stack, including one precision optical measurement fixture.

I designed one new experimental power-related product from scratch, and also worked on several subsystems on the next generation of glasses. Parts I designed included adhesives, foams, sheet metal clips, injection molded housings, and flexible printed circuits.

## Testing

I debugged headsets that were overheating and made recommendations to the electrical engineering team on how to reduce component temperatures in key locations.

## Manufacturing

I ran a bunch of fancy 3D printers that made prototype parts for the rest of the team.

## Workflow

I rebuilt the statistical analysis tool that the team used to make sure parts would actually fit together after they were manufactured at the factory.

## Fellowship —

With Zack Baker and Danielle Frider, I launched the [Contrary Fellowship](http://contrarycap.com/fellowship), a community of the world's top early-career engineers, designers, and product minds. We're \~300 strong as of Summer 2021.

Some notable achievements:

* Our Fellows have been instrumental in the growth of breakout startups like Retool and Ramp

* We've helped Fellows land roles at companies like Italic

* Several Fellows have founded companies and joined top accelerators like YC

I launched v1 of the program and began by shepherding the community with Zack, later moving into an advisory + operations role supporting our Danielle.

## Investing —

I've supported the investment team on several key deals by making introductions to talent sourced from our network. I've also occasionally supported investment operations, notably coordinating SPVs.

## Startup Search —

Zack and I took over the Startup Search newsletter. We launched Startup Search Verified to help our top subscribers get introduced directly to great startups. Later, we launched [startupsearch.com](http://startupsearch.com) and announced Lists, our compilations of top startups in categories like fintech and climate.

## Startup Fair —

With Jess Retrum, I launched [startupfair.com](http://startupfair.com), a closed career fair that pairs 100 of the world's top early-career builders with top startups like Anduril, Ramp, Vise, and Stytch.

## Tools —

I've built internal tools to keep the whole ship running. There's a lot more of this than you might expect (certainly than I expected).

I built + maintain [contrarycap.com](http://contrarycap.com) and design Contrary's brand assets for social media and email marketing.

## Capstone: multiphase flow metering

We experimented with adapting a single-phase turbine flow meter to accurately measure two-phase (air/water) and three-phase (oil/gas/water) flows.

## Mechanochemical reactors

Basically a fancy robotic mortar and pestle for controlled powder-based chemical reactions. Worked on this under Dr. Johnathan Felts.
