Latapals Flags is an ongoing project that includes a wide variety of flags across many categories, such as:
-
UN-recognised countries (e.g., United States, Mexico, Japan)
-
Other countries (e.g., South Ossetia, Luhansk, Abkhazia, Northern Cyprus, SADR, Somaliland)
-
Former countries (e.g., USSR, Rhodesia, RSFSR, Yugoslavia)
-
Micronations (e.g., Sealand, Lovely, Molossia, Principality of Wy)
-
Languages (e.g., Yiddish, Esperanto, Toki Pona, Arabic, Lojban)
-
U.S. states (e.g., Maine, Minnesota, Utah, Hawaii)
-
U.S. historical flags (e.g., the Gadsden flag, Confederate States, Grand Union)
-
International organisations (e.g., NATO, UNESCO, League of Nations, FIFA, the European Union, the United Nations)
-
Racing flags (e.g., checkered flag, Code 60, Meatball)
-
Political movements and ideologies (e.g., Antifa, Christianity, Order of the Holy Sepulchre)
-
Cities (e.g., Rome, Medieval Rome)
-
LGBTQ+ (e.g., Pride, Progress, Nonbinary, Polyamorous)
There are also variations of flags, such as:
-
Belarus (e.g., Lukashenko's, White-red-white)
-
Australia (e.g., Ausflag)
-
New Zealand (e.g., Hundertwasser Koru)
-
Afghanistan (e.g., Islamic Emirate, Islamic Republic)
-
Rwanda (e.g., 1962–2001)
-
Hungary (e.g., Hungarian Revolution of 1956)
Some cases may seem unexpected, such as these:
-
China is listed as PRC.
-
North Korea is listed as DPRK.
-
A certain flag from Germany is listed as NSDAP.
-
Myanmar and Burma are under two different flags (2010–present and 1948–1974, respectively).
-
Wy is listed as Principality of Wy (to avoid confusion with Wyoming).
Flags are designed on a 60x45 grid with a 8px corner radius, and they follow a certain colour palette, except for some flags where adding trying to add their similar colours to the palette would be excessive, such as certain LGBTQ+ flags. They also follow certain rules, such as:
-
Strokes and outlines should try to be 3px, but can be 2px. Going down to 1px is not advised, except for use in small details (e.g., the snake's tongue in the Gadsden flag).
-
Side triangles should have rounded corners, unless they touch a point where multiple colours meet. For example, the Palestinian flag uses a rounded triangle (for it touches only one stripe: the middle one), while the Czech flag uses a sharp triangle (for it touches multiple stripes: both the red and white ones). This is the same for cantons; for example, the Taiwan flag's canton has a rounded bottom-right corner, while the United States flag's canton is sharp. Union Jack cantons should not have rounded corners.
-
Corner-aligned cantons on flags without stripes should attempt to be 30px wide and 25px tall. 22.5px is also acceptable.
-
Non-zero angles should be divisible by 15°. When regarding stars or regular polygons, angles can be increments of 360/2n, where n is the point count (for example, a standard 5-pointed star can be rotated at 36° intervals).
-
Single non-band stripes (e.g., on Scotland) should be 10px (sometimes they can be 8px, like on Jamaica), while overlayed non-band stripes should be 8px (top) and 14px (bottom). On Nordic crosses, overlayed non-band stripes are 7px and 13px.
-
Five-pointed stars should have a 50% ratio. Centred ones usually have a corner radius of 1.5px should others usually have 1px. Properties of stars are up to discretion, but should be made uniform with the rest of the flags as much as possible.
-
All typography should be custom. Dense typography can be displayed as zigzagged lines or simply strokes, such as Arabic or long text, respectively.
Thanks to Duolingo for inspiration, and to Jace Attard, Gleb Sabirzyanov, and Akuro for their input. 🥰
