***88 Artists from 88 Years*** **is the inaugural exhibition in the Michael O'Brian Exhibition Commons.**

88 Artists from 88 Years is an alumni exhibition to celebrate Emily Carr University’s move to our new campus at Great Northern Way. The exhibition will include works by graduates spanning the years 1929 to 2017. It will showcase the diverse range of visual art and design practices including painting, sculpture, film and video, ceramics, printmaking, industrial design, graphic design and new media.Further, the exhibition will feature a broad range of Emily Carr graduate’s work from student projects to later or recent work.

City Shaped: In conversation with Lia Forslund

“It did not take long before my friendship with Tom Chung was established. When we met at an exhibition opening, we arranged to meet in his studio the next day and I felt completely at ease—so much so that I felt I had known him for a long time. I was new to the city and Tom Chung was the perfect welcoming ambassador. It was not strange that our friendship developed so quickly. Chung is part of a generational shift, fostering a young network of creative people in Toronto that utilize the cities tapestry to cross-pollinate and create new constellations of collaborative designers, photographers and artists. Another reason is that Chung is enormously convivial. As a designer, he is practical and economic, however, it is within his contextual sensitivity that makes his work both distinct and rooted.

Being authentic in the realms of existential philosophy, in other words, denoting a significant, purposive and responsible approach is a good introduction to understanding the works of Chung. He calls the design economic and sometimes raw, but it is his emotional appropriateness that makes his pieces stand out. Born in Vancouver to Chinese-Zimbabwean and Malaysian immigrants, Chung started his design life making skateboard ramps, before working as an architectural model builder eventually adopting a language of industrial design as the best way of expressing his ideas.

Chung’s studio, on Dundas Street West, is an immediately inviting retail space. It makes sense, even if he spends most days alone in the studio, the space is clean and bathing in warm sunlight. Chung’s world is made up of creating designs that speak to the city, through using what the city has to offer. During a cold November day, I paid him a visit to talk about what it means to be a designer, about the process and what it takes to resolve a localized idea.”\

Fromme is a versatile cafe chair which borrows from the materials and principals of early 90’s mountain biking.

The chair has been engineered to use as little material as possible. The construction uses a mix of custom extruded and cast components to form a laser welded structure.

The design of the back and seat rest do not use compound curves which allow minimal tooling. The seat is attached to the frame with no visible fasteners and use rubber polymer suspension in order to provide a tilt responsive seat. The suspension joints create a soft ergonomic seat despite its rigid material.

Due to the chairs construction details the legs are able to be extremely thin while passing strength testing for contract use. The small size and minimal material combines for a total weight of just 4kg, stacking up to 6 high and is rated to be used indoors and outdoors.

Beam is a table lamp which creates a new gesture for manipulating light. The lamp has a double ended head with an LED chip at both ends.

Proprietary software allows the user to switch the light from one light head to the other through turning a 2 way dimmer switch. The percentage of light intensity is always the inverse of the other which creates the effect of a beam of light transferring through the light head.

*Q: How do you go about researching mid-size factories willing to product low orders of educated experiments (aka prototypes)? Once you have your product, do you keep stock? How do you go about building relationships with companies that produce and distribute if you haven’t already made the investment to show at a design fair?*

To answer this question properly I feel I need to start by first addressing the complicated ethical and environmental issues surrounding manufacturing within a globalized supply and distribution chain.

In an ideal world, everything we produce would be sourced, manufactured and distributed within a certain kilometre radius of its distribution point. [I commend anybody who is trying to approach production from this standpoint.➀](http://lithlithlundin.se/page/detail/concept/48) Unfortunately the point that we find ourselves with modernization has produced consumer products that are not scalable with this model and this is where the true problem lies. This was very pointedly expressed by [Thomas Thwaites well publicized Toaster Project➁](http://thomasthwaites.com/the-toaster-project) where he tried to make a toaster ‘beginning by mining the raw materials and ending with a product that Argos sells for only £3.99’.

Perhaps in the near future with advances in 3D printing, freedom of information and digital fabrication we will be able to see a world where a de-centralized supply chain is operated by more traditional design production companies but localized to a certain kilometre radius of the distribution channel. If this was possible we could also see Industrial Design adapt more innovative models, such as licensing, subscription, [blockchain integration➂](http://128.171.57.22/bitstream/10125/41666/1/paper0517.pdf), pay what you can etc. It is perhaps a good time to look towards Enzo Mari’s seminal [Autoprogettazione➃](http://socks-studio.com/2016/04/18/critical-understanding-through-practice-autoprogettazione-by-enzo-mari-1974) as a possible mainstream model for our industry.

Decentralized production does already exist in some areas in our field, such as [sofas,➄](http://knoll.com/discover-knoll/our-story) where manufacturing is set up in both Europe and North America as the freight cost supersedes the economic benefits of centralized production. Historically companies would share licenses to manufacture and distribute the same products in Europe and North America. [Ever wonder why Vitra and Herman Miller both sell authentic Eames Chais?➅](http://eames.com/en/blog.blog-hermanvitra) I was surprised to discover that this type of partnership had been used in the past between Canadian company [Umbra](http://umbra.com/collections/bathroom-trash-cans/products/mini-trash-can) and German company [Authentics➆](http://about-tea.de/authentics-mini-can-trash-can-garbage-can-55-l-white-translucent-1020728-en) while i worked there. This is to say economics will almost always be the driving factor when it comes to the future ofsustainability in Industrial Design.

When we discuss production we usually start with discussions such as ‘Local’ vs ‘Off Shore’, ‘Small Batch’ vs ‘Mass Production’, but we must also dig a bit deeper to understand what this really means. If our goal is to solve the environmental issues within the production of *stuff* we should understand what we are making, and what the alternative to what we are making would be if we did not make it. What i mean by this is if the problem with the production of *stuff* [is driven by the cheap disposable stylized products of late-capitalism➇](http://newrepublic.com/article/156208/fast-furniture-environmental-fiasco), are we really fixing this by selling very expensive locally produced furniture to a privileged few? I am not here to criticize this model but I think we should understand that there is no easy answer to environmentalism in the production of *stuff*, and we should not shy away from improving the practices of mass production as a way to address these problems.

Instead of only asking if a product was made in China, Europe, or North America we should also ask where the raw materials come from, where the products are being distributed what are the conditions of production (regardless of its country of origin). If we are selling a product in five different continents it does not really matter where we are centralizing manufacturing, as long as the conditions of production have been ethically sourced the materials an productions processes have been well designed and the freight has been well considered.

Our complicated relationship with products, their origins and the different values we apply to western and eastern manufacturing is perhaps best summarized by the [Higher Brothers on their track ‘Made in China’.➈](http://youtube.com/watch?v=rILKm-DC06A)

The irony of a rap group from Chengdu, China appropriating African American mumble rap to disseminate a message about things originating in China is not lost on me, but this perhaps best exemplifies the point i’m trying to emphasize. The world we live in is more complicated and connected than ever and we must not retreat into a romantic pre-globalized past if we want to tackle the most urgent contemporary issues  we are facing when it comes to the production and consumption of *stuff*.

Plank is a furniture system for Canadian furniture manufacturer EQ3. The program demanded a series of closed storage functions with a shared universal door that could be made in a variety of materials using little to no tools for assembly.

The result is a group of asymmetrical volumes with two sizes of small and large sliding door panels which define the heights of each box.

The system takes advantage of EQ3’s top down production and retail model, allowing a variety of fabrics as well as wood slat doors which are sold separately from the cabinets.

Piton is a smart lamp which takes its name from the climbing apparatus. Similarly, the lamp may be combined with other tools, such as rope, hooks, clips or straps, to be rigged in various positions. An LED light source and acrylic diffuser allow a focused direct spotlight as well as ambient indirect lighting depending on the orientation. A steel counterweight in the handle lets the lamp rest in a multitude of sturdy positions, while a rechargeable USB power source maintains mobility.

Cast Pendants take inspiration from the traditional plumb weight — a weight hanging from a line used by masons and carpenters since Ancient Egypt to establish a true vertical. An honest light, the cast aluminum bodies are designed to be used as single pendants or in cluster configurations.

The use of LED technology allows for a surprisingly small scale, each light only measures 10-13cm tall. The collection suits both commercial and residential use. The lamp is available in three variations, and a splitter allows for a variety of configurations.

This project was born out of reading Philip Rawson’s book ‘Ceramics’ with a foreword by Wayne Higby.

One passage from the foreword which stood out to me was his description of ceramics and its relationship to daily life, and technology; ‘This intimate connection with a potent aspect of daily life and experience is what gives ceramics its particular aesthetic interest. Even though pottery must be based on a technology of some kind, if it is good pottery it always eludes the tyranny of its technology.’

My interest in ceramics developed during my residency at the Banff Centre, where planned production processes gave way to an intuitive material approach more attuned to painting or drawing, while still deeply rooted in functionality and technology.

What I aimed to complete over the course of the 4 week material matters residency is work with the clay printer, using this quote as a starting point.

I wanted to use the clay printer unconventionally, to create elements which could then be joined or manipulated by hand. The introduction of the hand with the use of a jig is an established form of pottery, from slip casting to hand building, the use of structural aid has been widely accepted as a valid form of craft. In using methods that introduce an element of hand work and deformation, I wanted to explore the potential of the 3D clay plotter as a tool that is sympathetic to the innate qualities to pottery.

The following objects have all been created by 3D plotting slabs flat onto drywall from files first designed in CAD. The timing of each slab is quite important to be able to join the slabs while still leather hard. Due to the fragile and thin lines of the plots, the slabs dry out very fast which makes timing all the trickier. Once joined with slip the ‘vessels’ have been individually hand glazed, with a brush or through dipping, in order to embellish the patterns made by the printer nozzle. Marks made by hand and machine are working cohesively in order to create a curious series of objects that rely on both.\

*We have decided to forego a thematic exhibition this season in favor of a summer-long collaboration between the gallery and local furniture designers Mercury Bureau and Tom Chung with art, design, cocktails, and conversation. Taking the viewing room―a traditionally private space—as point of inquiry this evolving installation will offer improvisational proposals for domestic space. Prototypa is a platform founded in 2017 by Swedish Design studio Form Us With Love, an ongoing conversation that nurtures the relationship between industry and creatives through exploring one of the most distinctive yet imaginative parts of the design process—prototyping. It is an articulation of where design is heading, a prototyping forum, peeking into the making process of the yet to be finished—revealing the instant, the iterative and the reactionary formulas used in making great design. The accumulation and evaluation of paper cuts, metal frames, cardboard shapes and 3D prints acting as platforms for communication, inevitable back and forths, negotiations, compromises and differences in opinion. Providing physical ideations from the industry—as opposed to finished products—unfolds a series of elevated performances, involving chance, accidents and intuition as well as, quality control, systems and methods of future advancement. The clash between the craft and machine become a central theme in the exhibition, as the works on display illustrate a significant shift towards an almost artful intersection.

A few years ago I participated in a juried design exhibition in central Europe. In addition to my project I presented a publication documenting the circumstances surrounding the first years of my studio practice in Toronto; the mundane elements of running a studio, the industrial nature of the city, and the friends who influenced my work. The title, **Local Source¹**, was purposefully tongue-in-cheek, questioning how we perceive locality and associate value towards it. My work did not have any sort of regional vernacular and was using materials that were industrial and globally sourced, but to me, it was deeply entrenched within the fabric of the city. Could this work still be considered local?

My indirect approach to constructing a local narrative was lost on some members of the jury. The message was clear; if you are to call your design regional it should be obviously following a (and better your) national design history. Although I was not surprised with the interpretation (design is a field which celebrates distinct classifications) it did make me reflect deeply on my own identity as a designer. Did my work lack meaning due to it’s vague international aesthetics?

**The emphasis on design presented through a nationalist lens²** is something that I have always struggled with. As a second generation immigrant I have never felt I belonged to one particular culture, country or place. Is design more valuable or authentic if it follows a historical regional vernacular but doesn’t represent or serve its contemporary locale? What is the relevance of regionalism within a globally transient society? As an ethnic minority must we resort to exploiting our cultural background in order to be given a platform within an imperialist system?

Ironically, internationalism, pragmatism and economic constraint is an unexpected thread between my work and previous Canadian designers. A few years ago I came across a book titled Modern Furniture in Canada 1920 to 1970. The curiously specific title by Virginia Wright, former decorative arts curator at the Royal Ontario Museum, chronicles the very short history of furniture design in Canada.

One passage of the book describes a 1954 furnishing committee that was assembled to dress the newly built Ontario Architects Association building in Toronto. During this process **‘the committee eschewed patriotism, looking at work from other countries as well as Canada, but announced that it had ended up being forced by ‘economics’ to buy Canadian ‘wherever possible’ ³**. Through these constraints they found *‘* **very little suitable Canadian-made furniture was to be found on the market’ ⁴,** and ended up designing most of it themselves.

All of a sudden there was a strange lineage between my work and country of practice. The difference was this story was not about Canadian design, but simply design in Canada. This design history that was not told through nationalist nostalgia or the romanticized landscape, but through government, legislation and economics. If we must discuss design through ones identity we should also consider their other direct environmental circumstances and not simply ones country of origin.

For me, my introduction to objects came from two very different places. I was born in Vancouver to Chinese parents who immigrated to Canada from Zimbabwe and Malaysia. When my father’s family relocated from Zimbabwe, they moved with many possessions from Africa, small limestone carvings, a record collection of mostly British music, and furniture that had been imported from Hong Kong to Zimbabwe before moving with them once again. These artifacts were strewn across our house and mixed together with ubiquitous Ikea chipboard furniture set upon a 1980’s patchwork renovation (read: large etched glass swan room divider) done by the previous owner (when I helped renovate my parents’ house a few years ago we found that the original brick fireplace had been buried behind the wall and replaced by a black metal one set upon a mirrored ledge). All this is to say there was a mismatched landscape within our house where I gained a sense of the world outside and developed an understanding of migration at a very early age.

Born in 1990, I also grew up surrounded by peak 90’s consumer culture. I used to spend hours watching informercials for all sorts of useless gizmos and once convinced my mother to purchase a ‘3D Rake’ from the shopping channel as I was so enthralled with its design (imagine a rake where the flat part was replaced by a cage with a lever mechanism that allowed you to pick leaves up off the ground without bending over, it worked horrendously). If I am to credit my introduction to design it might have to be TV first and my mother second. A trained economist and later part-time book keeper, she is not a designer in the traditional sense, but her pragmatic sensibilities made her a constant *fixer* around the house creating numerous *inventions* and *ready-made* home solutions over the years (zap straps, rubber bands, tape). If it worked it was certainly good enough, *functionalism over everything.*

In my design practice I have always resisted relating my cultural identity to my work, instead looking towards my direct surroundings for influences. In hindsight my refusal to shape my work through my identity has been a way to help me understand my own. My obsessive documentation of place through receipts, photographs, emails served as evidence that I was rooted somewhere. Reflecting on my past 7 years in Toronto, my upbringing in Vancouver, and everything in-between it is easy to identify an obvious connection. Economics first, Functionalism to its core, no time for the superfluous. If it works it is good enough; I approach my design work with the same attitude as my mother: the pragmatic immigrant designer.

The Pragmatic Immigrant Designer

Though High Point market may be the epicenter of many things in the American furniture industry, conceptual design wasn’t really one of them. That was until this year, when one exhibition brought a bit of the type of small-batch art furniture more commonly seen at Salone del Mobile or Sight Unseen Offsite to a onetime mill in the furniture capital of America. “This Is Not a Chair” is an exhibition of 40 items that are, ostensibly, chairs, but many of whose designs push the boundaries of traditional wing, ladder-back, or slipper varieties.

“We’re in a moment where everybody wants to design a chair,” explains Michael McGinn, a partner at Standard Issue Design, which curated the show. “In fact, there’s an overabundance of chairs—probably more than we could ever sit in. And we’re not just talking about \[those from\] furniture designers; you have industrial designers on one end of the spectrum, then architects attempting with their own distinct point of view, and then there are artists looking to riff off the chair as an object—often with a more sculptural interpretation that isn’t necessarily functional at all, which is interesting. The notion that a chair must be this or that goes away. Now a chair can be a conceptual work of art or it can be the dining chair where you sit and read the paper every morning.”

In this show, chairs run the gamut between the two. Models by Studio Sayso, Tom Chung, and Philippe Malouin are beautiful and functional seats, while “chairs” like Serban Ionescu’s “Peter Sellers chair” or Tom Shields’s three-chair mashup, titled “Bones,” don’t exactly invite sitting—though they do invite inspection.
