Description

We’re looking for a full-time product designer to join our growing design team. You’ll work as a part of our product team to shape the features we build for customers, and how we build them — from how they operate together as a system, to fine-tuned UI details that make our product great.

Tailscale is a technical product, but ease of use, zero-configuration, and great user experience are our strongest differentiators. Our product design needs to make the secure way the easy way, and help users understand complex security, networking, and privacy concepts. Design plays a critical role in making Tailscale accessible, straightforward, and trustworthy to a wide audience, including everyone from hobbyists to seasoned IT professionals.

We’re an early-stage and fully-remote company, and are looking for someone who is excited to collaborate with engineers and PMs, and is comfortable working asynchronously.

Responsibilities

  • Turn complex problems into easy to understand UIs that deliver a delightful experience.

  • Own the design process of projects end-to-end: from requirements, ideation, research, and testing, to information architecture and micro interactions, and all the way to guiding implementation.

  • Run user research and testing to seek qualitative and quantitative feedback.

  • Work closely with PMs and engineers to define long and short-term strategies for your projects.

  • Work closely with engineers to make sure the shipped product is as high-quality as your mockups.

  • Work closely with other designers to contribute to our nascent design system.

  • Advocate for and teach Tailscale’s design principles across the company and its different disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills that allow you to contribute meaningfully to strategy and alignment.

  • Comfortable working collaboratively and iteratively. You actively seek feedback, are able to discern valuable feedback from noise, and are open to iterating as much as necessary. Your projects don’t end when the code is merged.

  • Years of experience crafting web apps. Ideally, some experience designing native desktop and mobile apps. While those are not a requirement, you are willing to apply your strong design principles and fundamentals in these contexts.

  • You know how to independently manage workload and deadlines.

Research shows that candidates from underrepresented backgrounds often don't apply for roles if they don't meet all the criteria — unlike majority candidates meeting significantly fewer requirements.

We strongly encourage you to apply if you’re interested: we’d love to know how you can amplify our team with your unique experience!
