Simplified Coding
Introduce us to your team
Simplified Coding is a website for learning programming in Greek, completely free of charge, without advertisements or subscriptions. Our website was born in September 2022, in Epanomi Thessaloniki, where our founders, Odysseus and Nikos, wanted to create a website for learning programming. Now our team consists of Odysseus, Nikos, and Marios, students in Greece. On May 2, 2023, Simplified Coding became Fiscally Sponsored by Hack Club Bank, a project of The Hack Foundation (aka Hack Club), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the U.S. (EIN: 81-2908499). Later, in April, the Simplified Coding team founded Test Wiz, which became a child organization of Simplified Coding.
What is your team mission?
Simplified Coding's mission is to provide programming courses completely free of charge for everyone. This is because we believe that programming is one of the most important skills a person can develop, regardless of the field in which they want to work. The problem is that in Greece, there are very few sources for learning to code and most of them contain advertisements or are not completely free. That's why Simplified Coding will always be free and will not have any kind of advertisements or profit apart from the donations we receive. We want Simplified Coding to spread in the Greek community and we want to be able to spread programming to everyone.
What does your workplace look like?

The Simplified Coding Team lives and works on our Discord server. This is where we discuss plans and brainstorm ideas for Simplified Coding. As you can tell, we are very professional with a Game Night channel and an Unproductivity channel when we are just not feeling like doing work. You can check in whenever you want, wherever you are. We have bilingual discussions in both English and Greek, switching it up whenever we feel like it. It may sound ineffective, but this is how we got through all of our summer work!
What are your team's proudest accomplishments?
Here at Simplified Coding, our greatest achievement was when we turned our website from this

to this

This was part of the 2023 Summer Website Overhaul. We updated our website to make it look from a 90s website to a modern site. We added a ton of new courses and made our existing lessons better.

How does your team manage meetings?
Whenever we want to work together and hold a meeting, someone proposes a date and time. After we all agree on that, the organizer schedules a Google Meet meeting on our calendar, so we can all hop in the call and meet.
What does a typical day in the life of your team look like?
We discuss every day on Discord and complete the tasks each one has been assigned to on GitHub. We usually don't complete a GitHub issue in just one day, but we work on it for 3 days to a month, according to its complexity and difficulty. If we need to discuss plans, we get on a scheduled meeting on Google Meet, and if someone needs help with their task, we gather around on a Discord voice call.
What advice would you give to people who want to join your team?
At its core, Simplified Coding is open source. If you want to make a change on our website, you can go ahead and implement it on our GitHub. If you want to join our team you need to:
-
Have at least B2 knowledge of Modern Greek (that will be assessed by how well you communicate with us)
-
Have been an active contributor for more than 3 months
-
Are available for meetings with a microphone on
-
Have not violated the Code of Conduct for the past 4 months
If you fill all of the requirements, you can send us an email at main@simplifiedcoding.org and we will be happy to integrate you into our team.
