We’re a team of more than 30 product designers, content designers, and researchers working across the surfaces that comprise the Shop experience. We're passionate about design, thoughtful about using design as the tool to facilitate product strategy and alignment, and bullish on the quality of experience we deliver for buyers and merchants.

What values does your team share?

Our core value is to be design-driven as an organization. We think that the way we become the most amazing way to shop from your phone is to build an experience that is truly distinct from anything else out there. This means that, by necessity, design is at the forefront of finding new and interesting ways to engage buyers during their shopping journey.

What does your team's product development process look like?

We’ve adopted Shopify’s simple approach to building great products: GSD (get shit done). Shopify doesn’t subscribe to a specific dogma around product development. Instead, we’re committed to shipping great ideas that make the lives of our customers easier and more enjoyable. Because of this, we're a design-driven organization, meaning we look to design to guide what we build. There are 3 simple steps we follow in our development process:

  1. Proposal: When a team gets an idea for what to build, limit their pitch to one page where they outline the problem they are trying to solve, what a potential solution might look like, and how long they think they'll need to ship.

  2. Prototype: We're bullish on jumping straight into creating and validating solutions.

  3. Build: Work with our partners in development to realize our solutions and get them to our customers while maintaining a high bar for quality.

How does your team stay connected when working remotely?

While we work Digital by Default at Shopify, we also take opportunities to come together 2-3 times a year for Bursts™.

Bursts are organized at different scales and allow teams to connect in person and work on critical initiatives. We recently just had a Shop Mega Burst where all of us came together to celebrate our accomplishments thus far and get motivated about the year ahead.

Beyond Bursts, we’ve come up with some other creative ways to stay connected week to week. Examples include:

Shop Atelier The Atelier is a shared digital space where we bring work and pair design. We’ve filled the room with images that inspire us and flip on the audio in Figma to chit-chat as we work through stuff. Sometimes, it's productive. Most of the time, it's fun. We make just as many memes as we do actual screens that may or may not end up in Shop.

Weekly Wind-Down A 30-min. session on Fridays where you’re at the whim of whomever is the host. Come at your own risk. Sometimes, you’ll be asked to draw Lisa Simpson from memory, tell two truths and a lie only to find out your colleague may or may not have been Lady Gaga’s crush for a brief moment, or play GeoGuesser with some SERIOUS geography experts.
