Should designers code?

An understanding of the medium is essential. That does not require production-level coding abilities, but being able to write and understand simple code puts a designer at the next level when it comes to digital product design.

Fun fact: our Head of Design wrote a good chunk of the frontend code in the early days, and still contributes to the app codebase; he also codes our website (including the complex animations on the homepage). This ability to code allowed him to more easily translate Python and Clojure code to an intuitive UI.

What are the biggest challenges facing your team?

The infinitely complex nature of investing/trading. It is a massive engineering journey. Distilling everything into an intuitive, fun user interface while allowing for a powerful toolset, as well as heeding legal requirements, is a design challenge for the ages.
