Introduce us to your team
We are an intentionally small company building a web performance platform to help create a faster, more equitable internet. We might be a two-person team (for now—we’re hiring!), but we pride ourselves on building thoughtful, easy to use tools with less.
Calibre has been bootstrapped and profitable since 2017. We value sustainability in growth and the way we work. We keep rethinking how we can create a workplace of the future. Switching to a four-day workweek two years ago is just one example.
We believe it’s possible to build a great product and act with integrity, which we aspire to do every day.
What is the product you’re building?
We believe in equitable access to what the internet has to offer. But it’s hard to talk about equal access when nearly half of the websites fail to meet the necessary thresholds for core speed and user experience metrics. With each day, websites and services grow more complex and less accessible to a diverse, worldwide audience browsing the web from many contexts and settings.
While Calibre might look like a developer tool, we think anyone can positively impact user experience given the right tools and page speed literacy. That’s why we’re building a comprehensive platform for teams who want to understand and improve user experience. We know web performance is a complex space, so we’re focusing on delivering transparent reports that anyone can action.
Here’s a little sneak peek:
How does your team promote personal well-being?
Whew, glad you asked! Personal wellbeing is something near and dear to our hearts. After nearing two decades in tech (for both founders), we’re looking to create a more balanced approach to work that’s less demanding and more supportive of people’s lives. We work to live, not live to work, is something we live by.
We might be small, but we think carefully about company culture and designing the way we work. Here’s are a handful of policies that support and promote employee wellbeing:
We work 4 days a week, at a maximum of 32 hours.
We have a generous paid annual and sick leave policy.
We operate on a flexible schedule.
All parents benefit from 12 weeks of paid leave.
We have a workspace and co-working stipends to create a perfect environment.
We run regular 1:1s and team meetings to nurture a sense of belonging.
But we’re just getting started here!
What design tools do you use day to day?
What does your stack look like?
We rely on resilient and modern technologies. While we value what’s new and coming, we carefully evaluate the potential impact instead of jumping ship to what’s popular.
Right now, we primarily work with Ruby, Ruby on Rails, React, Next.js, CSS-in-JS, GraphQL, PostgreSQL and AWS on top of the web’s foundational technologies (which we have a big appreciation for 💗).
Where can we learn more about your team?
