This ceramic dinnerware set was inspired from a long dusty road trip through the American West. The dramatic rock formations define large parts of the landscape. The natural processes that have slowly eroded the rocks creates a random surface that is both wild and beautiful.
I wanted it to feel that the bowls, plates, and cups had been rough chiseled out of solid rock and then machine finished on the inside and bottom of the pieces. By studying the texture and fracture lines in rocks in nature, I was able to achieve this exterior rock-like surface treatment with clay.
Compared with the average piece of dinnerware, these pieces are considerably thicker and heavier. This lends itself to the rock perception and functionally adds thermal mass.
This project was a collaboration between my wife and I soon after we married. We envisioned this as a sort of wedding gift to ourselves — marking a new chapter in our lives.
