About
Hi! I'm Rutger, a freelance Product Engineer and Software Designer from Eindhoven, the Netherlands. I love to create apps that are a joy to use. I specialize in blending interface and interaction design with development, enriched further by adding that extra spark through haptics, sound, and animations.
My current goal is to help others bring their vision to life. I bring ideas to life through mobile app development using Swift and React Native, crafting experiences for Apple's visionOS, designing web applications, and creating digital products.
What I love doing most:
- Swift / iOS / visionOS development
- React
- React Native
- Designing great digital products
Projects
The Dutch brand Duux has been a specialist in the field of indoor air treatment for twenty years. Together with the rest of the Volst team, I got to design and develop a mobile app that adds smart functionalities to their devices and creates a digital brand experience.
Apple Design Award winner Odio replaces disruptive sounds in your environment with interactive spatial audio soundscapes to help you sleep, relax, or increase your focus and productivity.
Odio is a collaboration with the rest of the Volst team, Max Frimout and Joon Kwak. I have a leading role in the design and development of the app. I am also proud to have created artwork for some of the albums published on Odio.
I developed a mobile app for The Ocean Cleanup. The app enables volunteers to easily track and report the amount of plastics and other waste in rivers, seas and oceans. The collected data is used to monitor the pollution levels in different waters.
Modulaser is a desktop app for creating abstract visuals for show lasers, and performing live with them. Inspired by modular synthesizers, Modulaser allows the user to create patches and interactively play with their settings. This allows laser artists to create visuals in the same way a musician would play an instrument.
Created in 2019, but ever so relevant in 2023, Modulaser has become a staple for laser VJ's all around the world.
Awards
“The audio app Odio delivers incredibly lifelike ambient sounds — waterfalls, rushing rivers, lush electronic washes — made even more realistic with Spatial Audio and head tracking. Soundscapes can be customized by manipulating their mixes through a captivating circular interface, and each one is accompanied by futuristic fluid animations that unfold in perfect synchronicity with the sound. It’s a truly amplified take on the audiovisual experience.”

Work Experience
Volst was a small but highly efficient team of designers and developers. Over the years, we've worked for many great clients and launched two successful ventures: Odio and Modulaser. Our team is known for crafting high-quality, delightful apps, built with modern web technologies.
At Code Yellow, I had the opportunity to contribute to a wide variety of projects, spanning both Front-end Engineering and Software Design. One of my personal favorites was their own venture, TalkREX, which is a B2B web app that enables businesses to make calls directly from their browsers using VoIP technology.
