Work Experience

2021 — Now
Brussels

I am working at the Applied Research team of the Artificial Intelligence Lab. My task in this team is working on the Cyber Security Artificial Intelligence (CSAI) project, funded by Flanders' innovation & entrepreneurship agency. My main goal is to bridge the gap between my ongoing PhD research topic (sequence learning, recurring patterns, hierarchy, and dynamics in data) and the objective of the CSAI project: creating models and techniques that provide a degree of intelligence for cyber security beyond automated data analytics.

2019 — 2020
Brussels

In the summer of 2019, I was a part of a new project on behaviour anomaly detection in a cyber security context. For this project, I wrote a data pre-processor for machine learning models. I resumed my work in the summer of 2020, where I worked on detecting anomalies using finite state machines and automata theory. This project was a collaboration between the VUB AI Lab and NVISO, a Brussels-based cyber security firm.

Awards

2020

In March 2020, my colleagues of the “U+1F966” team and I finished 2nd (of the more than 200 competing teams) at the Cyber Security Challenge Belgium qualifiers. Unfortunately, the finals got postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, and we ended up in 7th place.

2019

In March of 2019, my team and I won the CSI Game. In this challenge, 26 competing pre-finalists of Belgium's Cyber Security Challenge investigated a fictional security breach. Technical and interrogative skills were required to fill in a questionnaire about the incident correctly. Our team – consisting of three colleagues and I – ended up winning this challenge.

2018

In 2018, a colleague and I participated in the first Belgian NLP hackathon, organized by the Flemish government. We were approached by Sopra Steria – a large consultancy firm – to join forces. After an intensive collaboration during the week-long event, we became one of the two nominated teams for “best startup”.
