Seam Social: Founding Designer Role

Who We Are

💡 Seam Social creates online experiences to foster whimsical relationships with your closest friends.

Welcome to Seam

We’re a Brooklyn based venture backed startup building a new social media app. seam.so allows users to code, design, and curate their perfect social spaces.

Let’s make the sharing with your friends fun & chaotic again. We’ve had enough of the sterile Instagram feeds that force you into sharing only in tiny boxes. No more Facebook feeds that smoosh all the important updates from your friends next to clickbait and news articles. Seam profiles are weird, customizable and re-theme-able. Drag and drop blocks, like music, gifs, and pixel art, and post to your friends walls using mini-apps. If the way you want to share doesn’t exist yet, you can code a mini-app yourself using our Block SDK.

Seam aims to bring back a user-owned era of the Internet, focused on whimsical and zany user expression, rather than impersonal newsfeeds. By using mini-apps to drop content into curated social spaces, Seam is making social media personal again. Seam’s focus on close friends and communities means it is not focused on influencers, amassing followers, or portable social graphs.

Also, let’s defeat the ads business model for social media. No more ads means no more doomscrolling, no more data collection, and aligns the incentives between the platform and the users. Instead, Seam has a marketplace of user created mini-apps, themes, and templates. You earn Seam Points by completing quests and creating stuff for the Seam community, and then spend them on profile customizations and unlocking the mini-apps your friends make.

Job Description

As a Founding Designer at Seam, you will have the opportunity to lead the design of a groundbreaking social media platform. This is a great role for someone who is excited to shape the future of social media and curious to engage with emerging tech like blockchain, NFTs, and AI. You’ll have a first-hand view into building a seed stage, venture-backed startup.

Responsibilities

  1. Own the product design process from start to finish.

    1. Scope and deliver timelines for completed design work; prioritize feature work based on user personas

    2. Implement full user flows in Figma, work with engineering team to break into tasks

    3. Measure the results of successful implementation against benchmark metrics and iterate when necessary

  2. Work with our engineering team to drive feature development, from initial design hand offs to final design polish review.

  3. Dogfood and play with Seam on a regular basis, filing design polish tasks and coming up with new ways to improve the user experience.

  4. Wear many hats as an early stage employee; in addition to product design, helping out with marketing assets and brand guidelines.

    1. Hands-on across all domains of design (web, mobile, brand, marketing).
  5. As we grow, transition into a leader at the company who is capable and excited about expanding the design organization.

    1. Scope design projects not only for yourself as an individual contributor, but also drive company strategy around design resourcing.

Who You Are

  • Expert in Figma for user experience design. Deep portfolio of past projects with full user flows, both on mobile and desktop.

    • Bonus points for experience creating design systems, marketing materials, and brand assets.
  • Capable of flexing between ‘hackathon mode’ and full design process. You understand how to cut scope in larger projects, and when to have fun hacking out a new feature.

    • Prior experience working in larger design teams with full crit processes, as well as scrappier 0→1 design work.
  • A passion for social media, and online communities, and a keen interest in exploring the future of social platforms. We want to empower the creative internet :)

  • Biased towards action. Proactively notice when things could be better, and jump in to help.

  • Default optimistic, big-picture thinker and collaborative problem solver.

  • Comfortable with early-stage startup energy (lots of ambiguity and evolving priorities).

  • New York based, in-person 4 days a week (work from home Wednesdays).

    • We love a good whiteboarding session in person!
