I believe tech will never be 'the future' if it continues to recreate historical bias. However, tech could be the future if it centres decolonial, antiracist, queer, feminist, transgender logics.

Speaking
Expanding the discipline of UX design through queerly deviating from the user journey. People are designed into "Ideal" Users via the speculative fiction of user journeys. how can tech be the future if it is designed to be deterministic?
Why is there a far greater hesitance to hijack public digital infrastructure (v.s. public street infrastructure?) Even the simplest everyday digital tool, like digital sticky notes, contains worlds of possibilities.

Pop culture mythologies state that AI is: All-seeing. All-knowing. Limitless. In the future conclusion of this dystopian narrative, being human becomes irrelevant. This is a myth that shrouds the mechanisms of AI. Us not understanding AI is what gives it its power.
My MA thesis researches the connection between mythology and the history of AI, relating AI to colonialism and larger human history. Showing that even the most ‘technical’ technologies began from mythical imagery.
Form follows content, but should form make us content? Browser-based game satirising how users are forced to perform for digital interfaces. Design and development by me. Built with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
[🌟 link to play MVP! (WIP)] Transforming my ±14,000-word artmaking manifesto into a browser-based game, where audiences navigate through drawing, layering personal interpretations over the text.
Publication processing homesickness through computational image processing on Python. Dragging artistic potential out of a Google Maps screenshot. Creating new images via creating mathematical formulae where images replace numbers. The same place of my homesick yearning can look irreversibly unknowable. Unplaceable. 106 images in 20 minutes.
Contextualising the 2014 Hong Kong Umbrella Protests using language, where much was lost in translation to non-Chinese-speakers, especially in the West. My roles: writing [English + Mandarin]; translation (between my co-designers who were not fluent in each other's languages); custom Chinese type; poster design. [with Shiming Yuan & Kshitij Gotiwale]
Imagining ways to make an academic bibliography appear approachable, fluid & fun. Bibliography as shirts, tapestries, interactive Notion database.
Drag workshop co-teaching free, open-source design tools to queer Southeast Asian participants with no design background. We taught how to create 2D and 3D collages as drag — hopefully inspiring alternative gender euphorias in a region rife with queerphobic censorship. [with Hua Chai]
Translated '00s porn mag into ➡️ Python database ➡️ 12 algorithms to generate blackout poetry ➡️ connect-the-dots colouring book, where the way I created illustrations around the shapes of the code output subverted the cishet white male gaze of the original porn mag. Featuring: Fibonacci-powered censorship algorithm, the most useless digital search algorithm, & algorithm that keeps only the word "fuck" then discards everything else.
[conceptual] installation where audiences design a personal website on an experimental design tool made by me. Design tools are often portrayed as neutral, with drab, grey toolbars. They are far from neutral — a design tool co-creates with a designer, structuring their creative process towards certain conclusions. What if design tools were more upfront about being opinionated?
