Toyota Hackathon

Leveraging AI to Drive Efficiencies at Toyota

Toyota hosted its first internal hackathon last month, bringing together teams from various departments to explore new solutions using artificial intelligence. Our team from the Customer Insights department participated to address some of the key challenges we face in delivering insights to stakeholders.

One of the main issues we focused on was the fragmented nature of Toyota's data landscape. Information is stored across multiple disconnected databases, making it difficult and time-consuming to access the full picture when analysing customer and market trends. We proposed connecting these siloed data sources through a centralised AI interface that can query all databases simultaneously.

Demonstrating the potential of this solution, we showed how queries that previously took days to resolve can now be answered nearly instantly. No longer would analysts have to go through various teams and systems - they will have a single point of access. The AI system is constantly learning from each interaction to provide more accurate and contextualised responses over time.

Beyond faster data access, the solution aims to standardise and streamline insight delivery. By structuring the Question and Answer process, every user will get consistent, well-formatted outputs regardless of the analyst. This improves the experience for internal stakeholders while reducing potential biases.

During the hackathon, we presented the financial and time savings that Toyota could achieve by implementing this across different departments. For Customer Insights alone, it was estimated the company could save over $8 million annually by eliminating redundant work and automating repetitive tasks. Scaling it further could unlock over $100 million in cost reductions over several years.

The proof-of-concept was well-received, with lots of enthusiasm around the applications in areas like supply chain management, technical support and compliance. Toyota sees this as an opportunity to derive more value from their wealth of operational data.

Moving forward, we will continue refining the prototype based on feedback. Future enhancements may include advanced data visualization, accessibility on mobile and integrating additional internal sources. Our goal is to develop this into a production-ready solution to drive efficiencies and empower Toyota with AI-driven insights.
