I typically curate a single year-end gift guide centered around minimalism. This year I also wanted to curate another guide that captures a theme that has grown in my consciousness over the past several years: tools and gear to help you find adventure.
With that in mind I give you Casus (Latin for “adventure”)—a curation of some incredible gear to aid you in your next quest.
Arc’teryx Alpha FL 30 & β Lightweight Jacket
The Arc’teryx Alpha FL 30 and Beta Lightweight Jacket are two incredible pieces of gear. The pack is fully waterproof and built of a burly Hadron LCP fabric that is abrasion resistant, making it suited for alpine and rock climbs, as well as trail hiking, and anything else you can imagine.
The β lightweight shell is an Arc’teryx classic. From the lively colorblocks to the soft, waterproof fabric—this jacket is made to endure an onslaught of rain and moisture and keep you dry and focused on the path ahead.
Hoka Trail Code GTX & Mafate Speed 4
The problem with many hiking boots and trail/approach shoes are the stiff leather and brutal break-in period. Hoka’s iconic Trail Code GTX and Mafate Speed 4 are the perfect shoes for hiking and trail adventures that feel supportive and comfortable on Day 1. With Vibram soles and a waterproof upper on the Trail Code GTX both of these shoes are durable year-round performers.
Grayl UltraPress Ti® & BottleLock™ Hip Pack
PNW-based Grayl makes some incredible adventure gear. Their UltraPress® Ti purifier bottle (made of titanium) is the most durable water bottle you can buy and it includes a built-in filter—making this the ideal way to stay hyrdated on long outings. It pairs perfectly with their hip pack that has the perfect amount of storage for a hike or day trip.
Black Diamond Helmet, Lamp & MiniWire Carabiners
For technical adventures I can’t recommend Black Diamond’s gear more highly. The impossibly light Vapor Helmet provides incredible protection at a fraction of the weight of other climbing helmets. The Onsight 375 lamp is made for climbing and helmet attachments. Also I love the MiniWire carabiners with their colorful anodization—perfect for attaching items to your pack on the way to your next climb.
Cotopaxi Gear Hauler 60L
Cotopaxi’s colorful Gear Hauler 60L hits every mark. The Del Día colors are fun because every piece if unique and playful. This bag has a nice outer pocket and cavernous space inside to hold all your gear. Plus it’s made of bomb-proof nylon and ready to take abuse.
HydraPak Force 3L
I’ve used lots of hydration bladders but HydraPak is the best I’ve seen. With durable details, muted colors, and ample attachment points this is the ideal bladder to take on your next adventure. It can be rigged into a variety of packs and will ensure you stay hydrated on the trail.
Arcade A2 Atlas Belt
Everyone needs a good belt. I’ve used Arcade belts every day for years on end. The new A2 fixes my only complaint with older model belts—the circular adapter would get caught in belt loops. The A2 Atlas is a simple and beautiful product that will get endless hours of use.
