About
I believe in building world-class teams by removing barriers so people can do the best work of their lives, being overly (possibly annoyingly) positive, and always looking at things from different angles.
Features
This is Joe Natoli's podcast. Joe is always so generous with his knowledge; I owe a lot of my design philosophies to him. I was intrigued by the title he chose—even though I'm not particularly religious I love the word faith in there. Also, he absolutely nailed the fact that I believe in design's role in making the world a better place. Really enjoyed this even though hearing my own voice is PAINFUL.
Work Experience
Empowering a team of talented designers to create user-centric, business-savvy solutions that simplify investing.
My focus is design excellence across platforms, aligning creative vision with business strategy, and helping the team do the best work of their lives.
Currently leading an amazing team building, simplifying, and scaling the trading functionality on our flagship mobile app. This includes product strategy for all user tasks along the investing customer journey: researching an investment, trading, and monitoring your portfolio. Also working on operationalizing our innovation pipeline and bringing new revenue drivers to the market.
Led a team of 15 designers working on a benefits-administration platform (at the time a $3.2T+ portfolio). Partnered with UX research to identify the three main jobs our plan sponsors were doing and organized the team around them. This made us more customer-focused by aligning the work directly to the customer journey, increased speed-to-market by months, and allowed us to scale product strategy across forty squads.
This role involved structuring the UX org around a new squad-based agile model, recruiting and hiring a team, and creating process, culture, and relationships across the design, research, development, and business teams. Also helped write and develop the principles for a new enterprise design system.
As lead designer, I focused on three areas:
-
Design Strategy: drawing insights from qualitative and quantitative research, analytics, design sprints, and contextual interviews. Changed the way we approached experiments: from validating through usability to qualitative testing early in a project to determine whether we're building the right thing (but we still did usability).
-
Creative Direction: ran a process designed to create meaningful, helpful, and beautiful answers to unmet user needs that also achieved business goals. Lead the efforts in building multiple design systems for our institutional site.
-
Mentorship/management: coaching ethically-minded, user-centered, business-savvy designers and helping them do the best work of their lives.
End-to-end product design lead doing research, flows, journeys, wireframes, prototypes, and final visual design for a $20MM+ program on a complex transactional site. Did all research and design for account profile, money movement, and trading customer journeys.
UX and visual design for the website resulting in a 15% decrease in bounce rate. Successfully redesigned our flagship SaaS application to enter a new market with an entirely new user base—using the same tech stack with only CSS changes. I also helped plan and re-work our internal processes and the org structure for growth.
• Art direction for campaigns across all media types: web, mobile, print, OOH (outdoor, billboards, posters, events, etc)
• Rebranded businesses to align them to the umbrella brand and wrote guidelines for corporate, range, and independent brands (there were 160 of them at one time)
• Managed a team of producers and designers focused on UX for mobile applications (iOS, Andriod), microsites, web, and mobile web applications.
• Partnered with marketing and technology to funnel lead data from mobile apps into an old and disagreeable customer response management system and managed to get a 25% voluntary opt-in rate
• Co-founded a pet travel supply company and took an invention from idea to MVP, to a patented, mass produced retail product
• Created all initial branding, packaging, website, video, imagery, and collateral
• Helped build the company and brought the product from positive signals from the market to nation wide sales in pet stores and on Amazon
• Managed a team of designers in Poland, France, China, and the US
• Raised click-through rates to 2x the industry average in a young and largely untested discipline
• Developed a cross-department testing matrix that lead to new and better metrics for measuring ROI
Successfully packaged/repackaged multiple products to improved sales numbers. Also art directed photo shoots for advertising and product shots, coordinated with vendors for production, and chose materials and colorways for all projects.
Volunteering
Pro-bono mentorship to push the design discipline forward and help as many people as I can
Education
I had always heard the term "IA" but wanted to really understand what it was. So I took a class.
Course work included graphic design, package design, copywriting, 3-dimensional design, software training, advertising, and presentation.
Cumulative 4.0 GPA. Before being accepted, admissions wanted to know why we were there so I told them I was going to be an Art Director. Managed to graduate with high honors (even got to wear a fancy gold braid on my shoulder) and eventually did in fact become an art director.
Studied geology and oceanography, psychology, criminal justice, art, public speaking/presentation, and philosophy. I took as much science as I could with the plan to study Marine Biology and save the whales. Then I realized living on a boat would not suit my propensity for sea-sickness, so I figured I'd draw logos for a living.
