About
I'm a designer, writer, editor, educator, and podcaster. I'm currently an assistant professor of graphic design at North Carolina State University and host of the podcast Scratching the Surface.
Outside of work, I'm passionate about photography, reading, watching movies, gardening, cooking, poetry, and learning to play piano.
Projects
A longform interview podcast with designers, writers, educators, administrators, critics, and curators.
A photoblog updated semi-regularly with my photographic work.
This book, co-edited with Liz Stinson and published by Princeton Architectural Press, featured both collected and newly commissioned essays on the state of graphic design today from AIGA's Eye on Design. Organized into three parts—Reflections, Questions, and Ideas—this book covers the most pressing issues and provocations that designers face in our current world, including the evolution of personal branding, teaching design history, the cult of minimalism, the perils of hero worship, and more. Contributors include Rick Poynor, Anne Quito, Briar Levit, Cliff Kuang, and many more. I also contributed two essays.
I was honored to be the 2022-2023 Latham Fellow at the Institute of Design at Illinois Tech in Chicago. As part of my fellowship, I took over the school's podcast, With Intent, and turned the mics back on the faculty at ID As part of my fellowship, I'm taking over their podcast, With Intent, turning the mics back on the faculty and the administrators for a series of roundtable discussions and interviews, to explore questions facing designers, design educators, and design students today.
I was honored to be awarded the Latham Fellowship at the Institute of Design (ID) at Illinois Tech for the 2022-2023 academic year. Coinciding with the school's 85th anniversary, I proposed a series of roundtable discussions and interviews about the present and future of design education, practice, and theory. The result was six roundtables with ID faculty that were turned into a podcast series, an online archive, and this book, which was published by Oro Editions in December 2023. I edited and designed the book, which is available wherever books are sold.
1, 10, 100 Years of Form, Typography, and Interaction at Parsons is a 400 page book documenting the communication design program at Parsons through the lens of three discreet time scales: the last year, the last decade, and the last century. I served as editor for the project, commissioning essays, interviews, and other content. Designed by 908A.
To celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of Design Observer, I worked with Michael Bierut, Jessica Helfand, and MIT Press to design and edit a book collecting some of the site's best essays. In addition to designing and co-editing the book, I conducted an interview with Michael and Jessica that serves as the book's introduction.
