Project - In depth
In this initiative, I played a pivotal role as a User Experience Designer, overseeing key activities such as user research, interface design, and collaboration with development teams. Leveraging my expertise in user research, UI/UX design, prototyping, and communication, I spearheaded the development of a user-friendly application interface. Our primary objective was to create an innovative solution to automate the deletion of expired promotional emails, thereby reducing the environmental impact of digital communication.
Objective:
Our objective was clear: to develop an application that significantly reduces CO2 emissions from email storage, promoting more sustainable digital practices. By automating email content management, particularly the deletion of transient promotional emails, we aimed to lower energy consumption in data centers and contribute to global efforts in reducing digital carbon footprints.
Challenges:
Addressing the environmental impact of digital communication, particularly email storage-related CO2 emissions, posed a significant challenge. We needed to design a solution that automatically identifies and deletes expired promotional emails without compromising user experience or privacy. Additionally, ensuring compatibility and seamless integration with various email platforms and services presented challenges.
Approach:
We approached the problem by developing a new feature on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to intelligently manage email storage by automatically deleting expired promotional emails. Utilising advanced algorithms, we identified and tagged promotional emails for deletion based on various criteria such as sender, subject lines, and content patterns. Collaborating with internal AWS resources and VML, we explored different approaches for identifying and deleting emails, prioritising user privacy and security while ensuring efficient processing and data handling within AWS's scalable and secure cloud infrastructure.
Results:
Our efforts yielded a user-friendly feature on AWS that automates the deletion of expired promotional emails, leading to a significant reduction in email storage volume and associated CO2 emissions. We also tested and iterated on different approaches for identifying and deleting emails, ensuring effectiveness and minimal user intervention. This work positioned AWS as a leader in digital sustainability, offering a solution that not only reduces environmental impact but also enhances user experience and operational efficiency.
Learnings:
This project underscored the importance of collaboration and partnership with internal and external stakeholders in tackling complex environmental challenges. We learned that user-centric design principles are crucial in balancing environmental goals with user experience and privacy considerations. Additionally, we recognized the need for continuous iteration and improvement to adapt to evolving user needs and technological advancements in digital communication.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, our journey to develop this innovative solution has been both challenging and rewarding. By leveraging AWS's scalable infrastructure and advanced algorithms, we have made significant strides in reducing CO2 emissions associated with email storage while improving operational efficiency and user experience. As we continue to innovate and collaborate, we remain committed to driving positive change and contributing to a more sustainable future for all.
