Project Overview
LinkedIn is a social networking platform that is widely used by professionals. According to Jobvite, most recruiters use social media in their work, and LinkedIn is the most frequently used social media platform for this purpose. LinkedIn offers various features that can help users improve their careers, including a Jobs section that helps users find the right job or internship.
In recent months, I have been visiting the LinkedIn Jobs section to look for internship opportunities. I chose to find internships through LinkedIn because of its well-established reputation. Additionally, if I find information about a job opening, I can easily access the company's profile without having to search for information about the company outside of LinkedIn.
User Research and Pain Points
During my research and experience using LinkedIn to find internship opportunities, I found several things that could be improved to maximize the user interface and experience, including:
-
Users do not receive additional notifications about the status of their applications.
-
The job search filter is too complex and inflexible.
-
Notifications about available jobs and jobs that are relevant to the user's profile are received in such large numbers in the Notifications tab that they can be annoying due to spam.
These three points also represent a majority of the results of the user research I conducted before starting this project. Before developing these three points, I started by creating a small survey with questions such as:
-
How often do you use LinkedIn to find internships?
-
Are there any difficulties or inconveniences when using LinkedIn to find internships?
-
What do you like about using LinkedIn to find job openings?
-
Can you tell me a little about the internship search process you usually do on LinkedIn?
-
Do you know how to customize or filter your searches when looking for internships on LinkedIn? If so, how?
-
What is your opinion of the internship search filter on LinkedIn?
I tried to understand and create a list of the problems they faced and the things that needed to be retained.
Persona
Further details about the results of the survey I conducted can be seen as follows:
- LinkedIn is not being used to its full potential in terms of its Jobs feature. Some users who frequently search for internship opportunities have complained about similar issues, such as the notification of the status of their applications and the complex search filter.
Challenge
In light of the pain points and user personas I have described, my goal for this project is to minimize the unnecessary and complex aspects of the internship application process for users. The simple premise is: click a button, get a job. My additional goals are to:
-
Make LinkedIn easier to use for everyone.
-
Give job seekers more control over their time and applications.
-
Maintain LinkedIn's engagement in notifying users, but maximize it on the side of applications that users have submitted.
-
Make this job search platform different with new innovations that can help users.
Design Solutions
In relation to the pain points that have been determined, I will try to solve these problems here.
-
To address the first pain point, users no longer need to worry or wonder about the status of their applications. A dedicated notification tab in the Jobs section can help them see the status of their applications. Additionally, there is a reminder calendar to schedule the user's application or interview schedule if the user is notified. This can certainly save users more time because they do not have to open another application to stay organized, to see the status of their applications, or to record information about their interview schedules. Everything is now in the LinkedIn jobs section. I was inspired to design in an innovative way by adding these organized features to create a smooth user flow on LinkedIn. This feature also supports a solution to the third pain point. The separation of the LinkedIn social account notification tab and their jobs section can help to minimize spam because now notifications about jobs and the jobs section are separate.
-
To address the third pain point, in the solution I offer, users can select multiple internship criteria that they want. There are many criteria that can be selected, and this makes it easier for users to find their desired internship in a more flexible way. In the future, only jobs that meet these criteria will appear.

Conclusion
The redesign process took a lot of time because of my busy class schedule. However, it has been quite satisfying for me because I can gradually work towards what I want in the future. Although this UI/UX Design Challenge is a requirement from Campus Indonesia during their selection process for Internship Batch 5, I have truly enjoyed the journey. What I have written reflects my learning along the way, and I apologize if there are any shortcomings. I am very open to receiving corrections, suggestions, and feedback from my fellow Campus Indonesia members regarding my work. Thank you very much!
