Wovoka is the transparency and insights layer to the voluntary carbon market. As the only designer on the small team, I re-designed Wovoka's Tableau data dashboard on carbon offset issuances and retirements into a modern, interactive dashboard.
Built for corporate sustainability teams, project developers, or offset inventors to make better decisions, the platform can be used to explore different sides —aspects (location, type or technology, registry, vintage year, project developers)— of the ~1.8 billion carbon offset issuances from the top 4 international registries.
Vintage vibe
A carbon offset's “vintage” is the year the emission reduction project happened which generated the offset credit. During the redesign, I did minimal changes to the layout of each chart section but to play on the term “vintage”, I applied an old style feel to the design elements. Keeping a strong focus on readability, I used a serif font (Source Serif Pro) with a classical feel for the titles and paired it with a crisp san-serif font (Sora) for numbers and values. On colors, I added Thistle purple and Linen gray to blend and also contrast with Wovoka’s dark emerald green.
Showing all sides
A hexagon is used to represent 1 ton of CO2e (CO2e is a measurement of the total greenhouse gases emitted). It is the most common shape in nature, having equal sides it fills a space with no gaps in between. This shape is used throughout the app, on map symbols, bar charts, and scope tags.
Filter as another way
To further enhance user experience, I created a fullscreen overlay filter screen as an additional option for users to drill down the data.
Within the first month of the launch, this generated ~100 sign-ups to view the platform.
