2006 — 2014
Zurich and San Francisco

Projects

2022

A modern way for businesses to communicate with their customers.

2014

I co-founded a wearable computing 20% project that became Android Wear (now Wear OS), Google's smartwatch platform. I helped conceive the product, designed large parts of the UI, wrote the design guidelines, and introduced it at Google I/O.

2011

I was the sole designer of Google Flights. I also designed travel-related results on the Google search results page. Some novel features of Flights (e.g. independently choosing outbound and return legs, search by map) are now common industry patterns.

Writing

2022

My writing on the Intercom blog.

2020

My personal blog.

Many of us in the design community pride ourselves on being tool builders, creating products that others can use to get things done. This is, at some level, the fundamental promise of all technology. Yet if we don't pay close enough attention, our own tools can sometimes get the better of us.

2018
Dublin

On curiosity, design leadership, entropy and play-based learning.

2017
San Francisco

The rapidly changing world and growth leads to many unintended side effects. This causes things to get more complex and then break down. Can thinking in systems help us break out of this pattern?

2016
Amsterdam

The last 50 years have benefited from the overlapping effects of three forces of technological change. But there are signs that suggest those 3 ages are coming to an end. What if we’re moving back to a more natural state, with technology taking its rightfully uncertain place in the world? And what are the implications for the design of digital products?
