Corey Ginnivan

Senior Design Engineer in Perth, Australia

About

I'm an Australian designer who codes.

I enjoy iterative design exploration, problem solving, and collaboration.

I’m particularly interested in bridging the gap between design and development. Making design simple and consumable, especially for folks without design backgrounds, with practical steps for it to be valued and invested in as part of practice is a passion of mine.

Currently I'm the Senior Design Engineer at Buildkite helping push forward our mission of unblocking every developer on the planet.

In my spare time, I’m building progressive enhancements on personal projects which I’ve built for the design and tech community; SystemUIcons and WhoCanUse and creating niche products for developer tooling such as FeatureBoard (acquired in 2023).

Appbot is a tool that aggregates app store reviews for all countries on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon stores and more. We surface user sentiment, bugs and feature requests, and seamlessly push this feedback into app development & support workflows via native integrations. Simply put, we enable companies to make better apps.

My time at Appbot:

  • I was brought in as the 2nd employee and first designer to help take Appbot to the next level
  • Involved in the complete product lifecycle from roadmapping to feature conceptualisation/implementation
  • Made it a tool used by some of the leading apps and app companies in the world such as Dropbox, Pinterest, Twitter and Disney.
  • Lead and executed a complete branding overhaul
  • Identified customer problems, pain points and successes
  • Heavily self-managed through lifecycles
  • Helped Appbot define company values and uphold when making creative decisions
  • Conceive and prototype ideas for features/product evolution and pitch my ideas/concepts to the team
  • Initiated, designed, built and implemented a component-first CSS design system
  • Recently took on an additional front-end dev role to assist in implementation and iteration releases, working closely with the engineers in production

4 years after graduating from my studies at Curtin, I was asked to return to become a Sessional Tutor for the semester-long unit 'Introduction to Motion Graphics'.

Using the curriculum outcomes and course outline, I developed a strong lesson plan to teach my students the practical and theoretical sides of motion graphics and animation, and to produce industry-standard results.

2010 — 2013
Designer + Developer at Launchpad Creative
Perth, Australia

Launchpad is a small boutique creative agency that carried a big name. Working directly with the Owner and Creative Director, I helped design and develop web and mobile solutions that would go beyond the client's outcomes and expectations. Working for partners such as Gerard Daniels, Dusk Candles, Lease Equity and Private Properties.

2013 — 2013
Senior Designer at Sumo Group
Perth, Australia

As one of two Senior Designers at a large digital agency, I focused directly on UX & UI Design across a broad range of clients, including Bankwest, Fremantle Football Club & Woodside.

I would be tasked with taking clients' visions from ideation to implementation and work closely with the clients themselves, as well as with designers, front-end developers, programmers and managers.

Volunteering

2017 — 2018
Co-Organiser at Localhost / AWIA
Australia

Localhost was an initiative designed to connect web, creative and digital communities, unearthing local talent across Australia.

Working closely alongside founder, Patima Tantiprasut, I was involved in the process from ideation through to execution. We put together a small team with volunteers to run 18 months of monthly meetups and created the grandest initiative of them all; the Localhost Deployment.

With help from AWIA and various sponsors, we created Localhost Deployment - an event that would see a speaker representing 1 of 4 cities form a touring line-up that travelled across Australia together to each city over four days, sharing their knowledge to new audiences, challenging individual comfort zones and gaining experience along the way.

2016 — 2016
Perth, Australia

I participated in WiTWA’s Techtrails event, a fantastic outreach program designed to encourage young people to consider careers in technology.

The events are served as incursions to both female and male students, emphasising the importance of positive role modelling of women in STEM careers for all genders.

The program is targeted at girls and boys in middle school, predominantly studying in regional schools and those with a strong STEM technology focus.
