My work lies at the intersection of visual storytelling and social impact: how can we use data visualization and information design to make the world a better place?
Toward this end, I build tools and write stories that make local government more accessible, catalyze civic participation, and empower citizens to be involved in their communities.
Work Experience
Building the next great data visualization studio. We tell visual stories on the web to amplify social impact.
I produced engaging data visualizations to accompany news stories for Axios. I used languages such as Svelte & D3, tools such as Datawrapper, and software such as Adobe Illustrator to create customized, interactive graphics for Axios journalists. More: muckrack.com/connor-rothsch…
I spent my senior year collaborating with the US Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division to research how COVID-19 is affecting low-wage workers in Houston. We met regularly with government partners on the federal, state, and regional level to provide robust insights for the WHD team.
Through a fellowship with Coding It Forward, I worked as one of two interns in USSOCOM's inaugural data internship program. In six weeks, I built a fullstack web application that automates the process of verifying inventory data. This tool is expected to save roughly 2,500 man hours and $102,000 annually.
I created data visualizations, static reports, and interactive data dashboards for government partners. My work reached a variety of government partners including the Texas Juvenile Justice Department, the Texas Department of Family Protective Services, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
