About

I am a Colombian-Italian philosophy graduate with over 40 years of experience dedicated to reimagining urban spaces and creating meaningful connections through hospitality and storytelling. In Bogotá, I spearheaded transformative projects such as boutique hotel restorations, innovative student housing, and the development of tourist landmarks like the Hotel de la Opera. These endeavors combined creativity, functionality, and community spirit, fostering vibrant spaces that celebrated local identity.

As a storyteller, my journalistic work chronicled the essence and complexities of cities, offering insights into their unique characters and cultures. Now, back in Italy, I am channeling my passion for travel, exploration, and innovation into Chatwin.travel —an ambitious project that integrates responsible AI, immersive storytelling, and sustainable tourism. This platform represents the culmination of my life's work, bridging my love for cities, history, and human connection with cutting-edge digital solutions for the modern traveler.

Algorithms, much like ecosystems, are shaped by the values we embed within them. Yet, the dominant mode of AI development often mirrors Darwinian extractivism: reducing human experience to data points, optimizing for efficiency, and ignoring the nuanced, interconnected reality we inhabit.

As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes industries and daily life, we face a critical question: will these systems amplify extractive behaviors that prioritize profit over sustainability, or can they embody principles of mutualism, fostering collaboration, equity, and resilience? The tension between these two paradigms— extraction and mutualism—defines not only our technological future but also our ecological and social survival in the Anthropocen

In my op-ed "La luna de miel de TransMilenio", I reflected on the early success and later struggles of Bogotá's TransMilenio bus rapid transit system. When it launched 17 years prior, it transformed urban mobility, ending the chaotic "penny war" among bus operators and improving the lives of millions.

However, I highlighted how subsequent administrations shifted focus to metro projects, neglecting the maintenance and necessary expansion of TransMilenio. This neglect led to deteriorating infrastructure and declining service quality. In the piece, I stressed the importance of continuous innovation and design improvements to restore the system’s effectiveness and regain public trust.

With an area of over 4,800 hectares and a span that stretches from the so-called ‘Bronx’ to Choachí, the locality of Santa Fe is the third largest in the capital. The figures are striking: about 100,000 permanent residents compared to more than 1.5 million transient citizens. This contrast explains why the city center belongs to everyone and no one at the same time. But even more surprising is the demographic, environmental, and socio-economic puzzle of this locality. How does one govern such a mix ?

The high migration of students to major cities is one of the many reasons why the university housing market continues to grow. As Colombia ranks as the second country with the highest number of higher education students, several investors are increasingly focusing on this business segment. Already established in Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, and Barranquilla, this market aims to transform the traditional student housing landscape.

As the guest of the day on Líderes RCN, I shared insights from my experience in hospitality and urban planning. I also expressed my views on the skills and requirements entrepreneurs need to start and sustain a business. I emphasized the numerous opportunities Colombia has in the tourism sector, highlighting the importance of improving infrastructure and transportation to enhance the country’s prospects in this competitive market.

Additionally, I touched on how digital marketing and online services are transforming the industry. From personalized travel experiences driven by data analytics to the rise of online platforms that connect tourists directly with local services, digital tools are reshaping how businesses attract and engage with customers. I highlighted the need for entrepreneurs to leverage these technologies to stay competitive and create innovative solutions that meet the evolving demands of the modern traveler.

At the University of Pisa, I worked on my thesis with Remo Bodei, diving into Henri Bergson and the fascinating interplay between Darwin’s evolutionism and Lamarck’s natural science ideas. Looking back, it probably shaped the apparent chaos of everything I’ve done since—always evolving, always transforming, like a butterfly moving through its seemingly diverse yet interconnected states.
