Language acts as a bridge, connecting minds, and fostering a sense of understanding and community. This is particularly true for Bangla, a language which has a rich history and cultural significance, spoken by hundreds of millions worldwide. However, the effectiveness of this bridge that I am trying to build can face challenges in typography. My research is driven by a desire to enhance Bangla typefaces, ensuring they can truly serve their purpose in mass communication, reaching and empowering a wider audience. The core objective of the inquiry lies in identifying and addressing shortcomings in existing Bangla typefaces which also lies in the visual appeal of the type. Through meticulous research and user studies, I aim to understand the challenges faced by the Bangla users. Beyond the practical benefits, a well-designed Bangla typeface can foster a sense of belonging and empowerment towards the Bangla culture. When individuals encounter information presented in a clear and visually engaging manner, which also represents the core of Bangla, it signifies that their needs and perspectives are valued. Ultimately, this research is about building the bridge. It’s about ensuring that the beauty and richness of the Bangla language are accessible through the digital medium. It’s about harnessing the power of typography to create a more inclusive and empowering communication landscape, where information flows freely and empowers every individual. Through this thesis, I hope to contribute to a future where Bangla serves not just as a language, but as a powerful tool for human connection and progress.
The outcome of this project was widely appreciated, was called ambitious, through this project I realised that my outcome is a concoction of expressive typography, calligraphy, street-hand lettering and my want to make it an utilitarian typeface for mass usage. This is a homage to my grandmother Mrs. Kalpana Gupta and my Bangla culture and language. Even though this is my first trial, this will not be the end of Kalpana, I want to develop it further and make an impact.

The visuals attached below are a part of my Trans-Disciplinary Research Multilinguistic Addressal of the City: (Addressing Bengaluru through its Existing Representations).
This is a testimonial zine form of a Graphic Novel where I bring forth conversations of people from my hometown Kolkata, West Bengal who have migrated to Bengaluru, Karnataka. Everyone has their own version of representation of the city of Bengaluru and I wanted to focus on what their perspective is.
I have used Procreate for my illustrations and Adobe InDesign for layout, text-image placements and completion of the entire graphic novel.
Invasion was also an outcome of Text & Image Studio, the process of getting the image and creating a poster out of it was similar to the Sur hi toh hai poster, I designed and chose such a name because I was going through a difficult phase of my life back in 2022 where I was trying understand what boundaries and personal space meant for me and to my closest individuals, this is a form of self-expression and outlet for my thoughts.
I have used Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator to produce this outcome.
Sur hi toh hai was an outcome of Text & Image Studio where we majorly focused on Grid, Layouts, Type and Image. We were given an image by the facilitator and were asked to design a visually appealing poster out of it. To design this poster I have used Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator to create this outcome.
Ajker Sohoj Path was an outcome of a Theory of Typography studio which is an introduction to the Bengali Language which has a very rich history. This is designed for individuals who do not speak the language and are keen to know more about it. Ajker Sohoj Path is a simple guidebook where the basics of Bengali characters, the anatomy of typography and the grid system are mentioned along with the introduction to playing the game of construction. This game majorly focuses on shapes and is designed for individuals to remember the shapes of the Bengali letterforms in order to recognise them and remember them better. This entire process made me closer to my Bengali roots and culture as it gave me a lot of insight into the history of how my mother tongue evolved. This is a work in progress which would become functional in each step that I further take.
I have used Procreate for illustrations and Adobe InDesign for designing the guide book.
Manual 1’s narrative is about a man who consciously chooses to consume and throw a chips packet on the street even after seeing a bin nearby which causes others to throw the waste in that same spot which turns out to be a heap of waste. This story focuses on how this man’s habit had a negative impact. Later in this manual I have proceeded to explain 5 habits that the young viewers/readers can inculcate to change their behaviour and habits to become more aware/conscious about waste management and how they should make certain behavioural/habitual changes in their daily lives to make the environment, their life and the earth a better place. This manual is written in Bangla because I wanted to tap into a space to promote cultural relevance, foster a sense of identity and encourage diversity.
Maacher Kanta (Fish Bone) is a project dedicated to my Bangla cuisine and my mother's love. I have designed this poster in Procreate and Figma.
Gone Bad is a poster which reflects what I am going through. It was a month-old project that I was working on where I was stuck with a certain part of this poster but eventually, I think everything fell into its place.
I have used Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create this piece.
This Illustrated campaign was an outcome of a workshop that I attended. We were given the option to choose between, LIC, Gold's Gym and Indian Railways. I kept the information minimal and gave the tag of 'Jeevan Sathi' which reflects the policy of Life Insurance and how much the company values the people who are associated with them.
I created this piece by using Procreate and Adobe Illustrator. I have used the Helvetica Neue Font: Bold, Medium and Regular for the Tagline, Heading and Sub-text since the company uses Arial and Helvetica for their campaigns and posters.
The concept of the story was to highlight how often imagination comes to our rescue from the reality. When the scene opens with the fish, it is visible that the fish is unhappy. It stares at the sea/water but does not jump right into it because it is scared to do so and wonders how it is under water. We as human beings are often scared of newness and I, for a brief moment wanted to resonate that which the main character of the animation that is the fish. It closes it’s eyes and starts to imagine the world under water. When our lives get really difficult to deal with we try to take a break, we try to imagine that if an alternate universe does exist, how would our lives be in that universe, how different we would be. The fish sees mesmerising things under water like eye stars, balls with fins, different shaped planets, a house, fish bones with halos, a plant with bag, the moon etc. These elements that are shown is a part of it’s imagination. A world where it has the power to control what it sees and how it feels. When we imagine something, we imagine to feel powerful in our vulnerability, to feel safe and happy. Imagination gives us an escape from the harsh reality of life and the fish exactly does that, it escapes from reality for a while to a world which exists on his commandment. At the end when it opens its eyes, it finds itself back on the land but this time it feels that something is different, it feels lighter and happier which is now visible. So it takes a moment, sits down and closes it’s eyes again. It chooses imagination over reality yet again because in that moment it felt free from all the despair that there is and felt the warmth of the world that only exists in its mind. The resonance of this feeling is also present in the animation. We are a species of many capabilities yet we feel suffocated so often, we need, as mentioned above an escape, our own kind of escape. Imagining a different world of belonging is my escape hence the Wonderpond is a reflection of my escape.
This is a stop motion animation which I made as my portfolio work for Srishti Manipal Institute of Art Design & Technology, Bangalore.
This piece was created because I was stuck, stuck to begin again. I realised that I have always found a way around situations, life is not linear and so aren't my ways in life. I took inspiration from a very close person who lives his life to the fullest with no regrets or fear. We have got one life so why not just go out there and do whatever we want to do, enjoy along with doing the hard work that will help us reach our goal, whatever that is?
I have used Figma to create this design.
While creating this piece I used a lot of gradients, noise, texture and the blur effect to express how I truly felt about my journey.
Khujchi Ami is a Bengali rap song sung by a Kolkata, India-based group of artists called Kharap Khobor (Bad News). Through this rap song, the creators have tried to express what they felt when their partners left them and how they felt that pain, anger and exhaustion. I used Figma and Procreate to create this album art keeping in mind what the creators are trying to express through this song.
This Graphic Novel was the outcome of the Trans-Disciplinary Research that I had in my 1st semester. It revolved around the theme of Music and Sound, the constant comparison and association of sound and music between two cities - Kolkata and Bangalore. I was heavily influenced by Persepolis and wanted to experiment with ‘How much Black is too much Black’. I also made this graphic novel bilingual because my mother tongue is Bengali and I thought this would be an interesting take on how I write the dialogues and narrations. My medium was traditional as I felt that I needed that space to feel and understand how I develop the skill that is required to create an authentic piece of art.
This initiative was taken by two of my esteemed peers and me when unfortunately Covid-19 hit us. We provided resources and helped raise funds for the patients who reached out to us. We had more than 1000 volunteers to work with and collaborated with multiple organisations and well-known personalities from Kolkata to raise awareness about Covid-19.
Shareerspeak was an initiative taken by Youth Leader's Active Citizenship after the fellowship was over, I took it forward from thereon and worked to sensitise people regarding, body positivity, mental health and queer-ness.

These are some of snippets the visual documentation of my life which I would be releasing on social media platforms (Youtube and Instagram). All the videos that I would be releasing would majorly be silent because on a personal level I wanted to get away from the noise of my mind and this is my way of expressing, minimal, noiseless repository of my life.
This is a client work where the brief was to make the layout and design of the book as minimal as possible for an individual who is 60+ and caters to audience who are 60+ as well. The title of the book Kalam-e-Shiraz, was done by a Lucknow Calligraphic artist Mr. Deependra and the hand Illustration was done by me to resonate with the title of the book itself. This book was designed and completed in a period of 3 months with constant back and forth feedback from the client as well.
I have been journaling since 2018, these are some of the pages from my memories that I collected throughout my life's journey.
This is a Figma exploration.
This is a Figma exploration, my motive was to make absurd figures with faces which has a Bangla cultural connotation.

Anatomy of a part of my room in my PG house 68 ♾️
That day in the middle of a stormy night there was load-shedding and I realised my jury is in a few weeks, submissions were dancing on top of my head and I noticed what a mess a corner of my room has been. I wanted to document it, and keep it in my memory because it's special, even though it's messy, it's special.
বডড মনে পরে তোমাকে।
My roommate and I hung this 1.5 m cloth on our wall and decided to make it our canvas. As we progress, we do become stagnant and today I felt like all the memories from my childhood were rushing back and I missed her, I missed the small Arjama.
When I started painting I didn't know what it would have turned out to be but when I finished, it looked like a meteor, a colourful one.
I am so grateful to my younger self for trying so hard to keep it together then so that I can have these realisations now and grow each day as a person.

Major focus of the organisation was advocacy through art. It started with YLAC (Youth Leaders' Active Citizenship) where we were asked to create multiple online spaces for sustainability, bullying, body-positivity, Queer rights and other mental health issues. After the fellowship was over I decided to continue it and slowly over a year we were a team of 75 people and all of us were either in school or just starting college, we had the privilege to help our peers and other individuals who were going through a tough time by lending our ears and creating art to spread awareness about mental health and body image issues which are very very crucial. Unfortunately we had to halt all our operations due to further studies but my hope and aspiration is to built a safe space for people in the future and make an impact.
I got the privilege and opportunity to speak at such a prestigious platform about my journey and the organisation of Shareerspeak.
