We thought it would be fun if we opened this up as a wider community project, and have you all help us define a set of community-created alternate app icons.

### Inasa Fujio

I first discovered the work of 21 year old game developer Inasa Fujio through their tweets chronicling the game development process of *[Rainy Season](https://inasafujio.com/portfolio/rainy-season/)* and *[Inaka Project](https://inasafujio.com/portfolio/inaka-project/).* Their work has an inescapable ability to create a sense of nostalgia for places you've never been. Recreating these types of feelings and environments was a big source of inspiration.

### Blender

Prior to this project I had no experience with any 3D modeling software. I had a general idea of the type of low-poly/cell-shaded characters I was trying to accomplish and got up and running with a [tutorial series](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjB3Ao1tNxs) by Cherylynn Lima. Her series made experimenting in Blender feel a lot more enjoyable, and by the end of it I had a fully modeled and [rigged](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5h2HvkqXZ0&t=97s) version of myself.

### Wildcat Canyon

The 2,429 acre East Bay regional park known as [Wildcat Canyon](https://www.ebparks.org/parks/wildcat/) has been a frequent area of exploration for both cyclists and hikers alike. In his piece *Again* (2012), Oakland–based artist David Wilson demonstrates the virtue of observation and habit forming.

> This large-scale drawing of the East Bay’s Wildcat Canyon was made by David Wilson over the course of many months. Each day he would travel by bus and foot to the same spot overlooking the canyon with a single piece of paper. The focus of each drawing depended on Wilson’s ability to remember his work from the previous day. He only assembled the complete work once he had finished each and every individual drawing.¹

### Three.js

Once the model was completed in Blender it was exported as a glTF (GL Transmission Format) file and [imported into a Three.js scene](https://threejs.org/docs/#examples/en/loaders/GLTFLoader). This part of the process was maybe the most familiar as it was mostly just web development — typical stuff like mapping key commands to incrementing the object's position, or whether a boolean such as `walking` was true or false.

There were a few techniques which were important for creating the scene though. The first of which was the means by which the grass is created. Rather than model each blade of grass, we duplicate a single blade of grass and randomize it's size, orientation, and position across a surface. To achieve this we use a utility class called [MeshSurfaceSampler](https://threejs.org/examples/#webgl_instancing_scatter). Once our blades of grass have been replicated we use an [Instanced Mesh](https://threejs.org/docs/#api/en/objects/InstancedMesh) to reduce the number of draw calls in our scene.

Through a lot of patience, experimentation, and trial and error the end result started to feel more and more natural and meditative. A big thank you to [Gleb](https://read.cv/gleb) for guidance with Three.js.

### Ryuichi Sakamoto

Japanese composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto pioneered early electronic music both as a solo artist and as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra. In *[Coda](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6578572/)* (2017) Sakamoto shows his process of using a pocket recorder to capture the sounds of his environment for use in his compositions. In this same spirit I purchased a Zoom H1n recorder and made several field recordings in the hills, however the final audio has yet to make it into the piece.

### Notes

This was a particularly rewarding project simply because there wasn't an end goal in mind. Approaching development as a sketch and enjoying the process was something I hope to do more of in the future. By sharing some of the process and influences here I hope it will inspire more projects of a similar ilk.

*Pattern* was a design and prototyping tool designed for the iPad. The intention was to create a notebook style drawing tool that would take advantage of the Apple Pencil, which was introduced around the same time.

At the time most drawing applications focused on freeform artist tools, such as brushes and other painterly effects. *Pattern* had a strong focus on more architectural qualities, allowing the user to create geometric shapes and lines that would adhere to the document grid.

*Pattern* also created UI specific drawing tools, such as device templates and quick wire-framing tools such as text. These tools were coupled with the ability to annotate freehand with the Apple Pencil.

*Pattern* was originally listed for $2.99 in the app store and initially sold \~3,000 units on launch day. It was featured on several news outlets such as [High Snobiety](https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/pattern-app-design-drawing/) and [Hypebeast](https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/pattern-app-design-drawing/), and the marketing website was featured on [Siteinspire](https://www.siteinspire.com/websites/6693-pattern).

Ultimately I was unable to upkeep *Pattern* on my own and it was eventually  sunset a few years later.

Self-publishing a drawing app for iPad

Taking a break from regular content to share some notes here about my personal experience with a condition called Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia. Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia is a rare condition affecting 0.2-0.4 per 100k people per year, and as a result there aren't too blog posts about it. I'm sharing this in the hopes that it can be helpful to someone who might be Googling or asking some AI bot about this condition in the future. None of this is medical advice, just what I've been through personally.

In 2019 I began experiencing "electric shocks" in my face. After some Googling I first believed the pain was a result of [Trigeminal Neuralgia](https://twitter.com/travisbarker/status/1707887628299780109) (TN), but would later find out it was a more rare condition called Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia (GPN). The chronic pain caused by TN and GPN is similar, just in a different region of your face. Since chronic pain is often invisible it can be hard for others to empathize, but for reference [TN ranks at the top on the McGill pain index](https://res.cloudinary.com/read-cv/image/upload/c_limit,h_2048,w_2048/v1/1/pages/DxlZwGtHZsQ72Hf089rHJYaVKd12/YunbkSgH9FZBUMuuxfBS/023e5453-6dc8-47ff-b156-f40ad01f4f13.jpg?_a=ATO2BAA0). It's an extremely painful condition 🫠

### **Notes**

* Flare ups can be triggered by yawning, talking, moving your head, cold weather, eating, or drinking (pretty much anything). For me the worst trigger was eating. Avoiding anything spicy or sour, and eating smaller bites at once helped reduce flare ups.

* There are a variety of medications that neurologists can prescribe to help reduce the side effects of neuralgia. The drug that helped me the most was an anti-seizure medication called **Carbamazepine** (also known as Tegretol). This drug was quite effective at minimizing flare ups, though I did have to consistently increase my dosage as time went on. By the way, if you're on Carbamazepine and you get covid, don't take Paxlovid! The combo will cause projectile vomitting – I found this out the hard way 🤮

* Accupuncture comes up quite frequently if you search for neuralgia treatments, but to be honest it did nothing to help my condition (although I did enjoy my sessions overall). I also met a woman in a bar in Mexico City who told me she treated neuralgia with bee sting therapy, but didn't investigate this further 🤔

* Not all hospitals are created equal. I had previously visited neurologists at other hospitals such as Sutter Health who were quite frankly useless. It wasn't until I got referred to UCSF that I felt like I was working with real experts who knew about this condition. If you can, get referred to UCSF as soon as possible by a GP and talk to Dr. Min Kang (Neurologist) and Dr. Edward Chang (Neurosurgeon) at UCSF.

* **Get an MRI *with contrast***. Contrast is a harmless dye that is injected intravenously before an MRI in order to help create a clearer image of your brain. I originally did an MRI without contrast which ended up being totally inconclusive. My second MRI at UCSF done with contrast revealed an enlarged artery that was compressing my glossopharyngeal nerve. Bingo!

* **[Microvascular decompression](https://www.ucsfhealth.org/treatments/microvascular-decompression)** is a surgery that can be used to alleviate pressure on the nerve if a compression is found. It's a brain surgery that involves placing a piece of surgical teflon between the artery and nerve, in essence creating a cushion to protect the nerve. The surgery takes around 4 hours, requires a two night stay in the hospital. Once you're sent home it's another 6 weeks of recovery. I had this surgery done in September 2022 and it resulted in 14 months of remission, though I am just began experiencing a relapse in symptoms this weekend.

This condition really sucks, and it is honestly disheartening to start experiencing pain again after 14 months of remission. On the bright side, as a last resort, GPN is treatable by severing the Glossopharyngeal nerve completely (with taste and swallowing as a possible side effects). I will keep this post updated with any developments.

Facial pain

[Andy's World](http://andys.world) is a community built in the spirit of the late 2000's image sharing app [FFFFound](http://ffffound.com/). Despite staggeringly low user growth, a shared aesthetic has evolved and emerged from the website. A niche [community](https://andys.world/members) of users maintain the mix of digital artifacts, which when viewed as a collective feels intrinsically post digital.
