Let's talk about support for artists and the local communities that fuel them.
Bandcamp is inherently important in the continuation of artist ownership and sustainability in music for our digital age. It's a huge resource with an "artists first" approach. This case study dives into some of the pain points with the current Search & Discovery systems at Bandcamp. I detail how it could be improved to generate more organic discovery and turn attention to budding and thriving local music scenes.
Initial Thoughts and Questions
• What is the meaning of these discover colors? Do they have value other than aesthetic value and what indicates which tag is which color? What are the criteria for these colors? What would make sense across all versions of the site?
• Design System auditing and cohesion: if tags are a pill CTA, they should be pill styling sitewide. 💊
• Location, Format, Time filtering system is inconsistent on Homepage Discover with Genre pages that use a dropdown.
• Discover only accounts for music released in the past 6 weeks, not all discoverable music in the database is accessible.
Final Proposed Solution
This solution creates a clearer hierarchy and a more natural flow that encompasses the Search & Discovery ecosystem of Bandcamp.
