Communication in Brussels
About
As a graphic designer, I believe that form follows function. I start by understanding the project’s goals and needs, always considering the target audience, context, and media. Every element I design has a purpose: to improve the user experience and communicate clearly. I avoid unnecessary decoration and focus on creating simple, functional designs. For me, good design looks great and works well. In these times of visual overload, maintaining clarity in messages without details that distract attention can be very important.

Event co-organized by the JRC and the Committee of the Regions. For the event, a visual identity was created and applied to signage, online and offline communication, digital elements, and a poster exhibition (in the Committee of the Regions building) created by different member states. Photographic coverage of the event was provided for social media and other media outlets.
“Science meets Regions” (SMR) originated in 2016, in the wake of a series of high level “Science meets Parliament” events organised by the JRC. It was soon realised that a thriving science for policy ecosystem at EU level requires an equally solid evidence-informed framework at local and regional level, where policies are actually implemented.

The JRC's Annual Report gives an account of the activities, accomplishments and resources related to the JRC’s work carried out in 2022. As well as an overview of scientific achievements and activities, the report also includes corporate initiatives. The Annual Report features a balanced structure in two parts. The 1st covers a selected few key areas of activities and the 2nd gives examples of concrete science-for-policy achievements contributing to the Commission priorities — taking the reader through the activities of the year and giving insight on the strategic dimension of the JRC's work. The Annual Report also features a short section which provides insights into the organic evolution of the JRC over the past few years.

The new visual identity for the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, which provides independent, evidence-based knowledge to support EU policies, avoids the use of logos per the Commission’s visual communication guidelines. Instead, it relies on compositional structures with various graphic elements and visual norms. The identity draws on the JRC's motto, "Science for Policy," representing science through circles, a historically common element in scientific imagery, and policy through the European flag’s stars. The symbol, not a logo, features the 12 stars transformed into circles of different sizes to evoke continuous scientific activity, complemented by a gradient background and the Light variant of the EC Square typeface.

A Handbook for national, regional and local authorities on why and how to engage with the European Commission Science and Knowledge Service. For this project, we worked with clear concepts represented by symbols created specifically for the project and a color code. It was necessary to work while considering text space because the project had to be translated into all the languages of the member states.
